Question about 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

Alternator trouble I recently replaced my alternator and it doesnt recharge my battery. I thought i got a dud from autozone so they replaced it with another new one... the problem still exist. When i was removing it the wire that connects to the alternator(it says battery on the alternator above the wire) got twisted around once. My battery is fine, im thinking it may be that wire that got twisted. please let me know what you think..

Sounds like the problem is in the twisted wire.

Car battery corroded, terminals white. Jumped car but doesnt rev. Must it be alternator or could a dud battery suck the juice from alternator to stop car reving?

I would take the battery out and have it checked, or, you might want to invest in a modern battery charger that can also check the charging system as well as desulphate lead acid cells.

Replace alternator but car doesnt start wont start without a jump start?

your battery probably has a dead cell.replace it,the battery. this should cure the problem.once the car is started take off the battery cable if it stays running the alternator is working.

Auto Zone does not test the alternator under full load so the test result could be borderline.
start the car and turn everything on. If the voltage drops lower than 14.2
replace the alternator.
also the battery could be being drained overnight. to check use a test light by removing a battery terminal and connecting light between battery and cable with car off.
if it lights start be removing fuses.
when the light goes off the problem is with this circuit.
lastly if the light stays on take the wires off the alternator.
if the light goes out replace alternator.

2003 HIGHLANDER ALTERNATOR PROBLEM, CAR DIES

Jump start and check voltage across battery terminals. Should read between 13.8v to 14.5v. You could check battery voltage first and if its below 12v then either the battery is dud or alternator not charging. could be just brushes or regulator . Either way alternator will need to be removed and repaired

retest your alternator/charging system. Either alternator or voltage regulator is bad. If you have a volt meter/or access to one - easy test - start car and test voltage at battery - it should be 12.6 - 14.8 volts w/car running anything less you have alt/volt reg problem

Recently we had to have the '97 malibu towed off the hwy when the battery light came on and car stalled. The alternator was replaced & timing belt to boot. Battery given a qk recharge. Before leaving...

Its possible the alternator that was installed is defective. If you have a six cylinder check for power at the positive post on the back of the alternator. If you see battery voltage than I would suspect the alternator is bad.

BTW, you had the serpentine belt replaced as there is no timing belt on either of the motor options for that vehicle.

As i was driving my truck shutoff completely.NO POWER to anything at all

The first thing to check is the charge condition of the battery. If the alternator failed while driving, the battery would drain fairly quickly depending on what was turned on. If the battery is indeed discharged, it needs to be recharged with an external charger--about 8 hours at 2-4 amps, about 2 hours with a high current charger (~20 amps). When the battery is charged, try for start. If it acts ok, then measure the battery voltage with the engine running--it should read 13.5 volts or more if the alternator is working. If the alternator is in trouble, you will likely read 12.6 volts or less. Take the truck to Autozone or similar business that gives free checks on the charging system. If the alternator developed a shorted diode, it will cause a fusable link in the wiring harness to burn out (like a fuse), but is more trouble and money to replace. The alternator must be replaced before the link is replaced. Hope this helps!

Have the alternator tested. Both Autozone and Advance auto will do it for free. It's probably the diode.

Run the car, then disconnect the negative pole on the battery, then the positive pole.

If the car keeps running then your new alternator is working properly.

If your car stops then your new alternator is bad.
