What does error code mean on the dash board of a 1998 Buick Regal?

What is the error code? Most auto parts places will read the code from the computer for free.
You may need to "jump" your car to start it, depending on how long it's been sitting.

Wont start

Usually the error in the odometer area of the dash is caused by a serial data communication error. This problem is keeping the skim"security immobilizer" from telling the PCM that the vehicle is not being stolen. Most times I would recommend the dealer for communication and security related problems.

Hyundai accent 2008 starting issue. I wanted to post this to help others Mentally & financially as this is one of those things I could have spent hundreds on. Instead my dealer said you can throw parts at it & hope, or wait to an error code revealed itself. In the previous month I had replaced all belts, plugs & battery as I'm at 130000k & just paid it off. Ironically a week after my last car payment .this starting issue began, Get in ,drive to a store ...get back in to go home no start. Timing belt was just replaced...not timing1 Plugs just replaced...not plugs. Plenty of crank ,,new battery. Starter turns 2 or 3 cylinders fire & quits. What the F---!Take to the dealer...mechanic says it can be 1 of 4 things but of course starts there for him every time. Serviceicon1.png desk guy says to wait for error code to show up. Well 2 frustrated months later same problem & no code. However he also had asked if Id seen an error code of a key inside a car stay lit on my dash, if so it meant a fault in the key reader, After being stuck twice in one day last Friday I decided to pull my plugs and check for loose or whatever. Long story short after putting all back together,,,same problem!!! Yet it finally came to me ...YES there really is an answer. As I turned the key I started focusing on the dash and what lights came on .1st turn Acc,,,2nd turn about 5 things light up including a pic of a key inside a car,,3rd turn of the key cranks the starter & turns over the engine. Well ,,,it finally occurred to me on turn 2 that one of the lighted pics was missing...you guessed it,,,little key in car. So I kept turning from key from 1 to 2 for lights on dash until it finally lit up an when it did I turned the key to start & it did. Shut it off & tried again but noticed pic missing and car didn't start, I had been waiting all these months for this **** pic to show up as an error code on my dash but the problem was ...sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't so because it hadn't faulted yet no permanent error code could be read. However now I know I need a new key reader because so long as that pic appears on the dash in 2nd key turn ,my car has no issue, when pics not there it isn't starting. Hope this helps others diagnose this simple yet frustrating problem, life's simpler when you know what to look for.

Does not start. message on left of dash reads: " start prevented try again" - hv tryed locking & unlocking, shifting transmission to neutral, message continues what are yr thoughts,...

If you have a 2nd key, try it. Obviously, if it works, the first key is bad. If it doesn't work, it may be the antenna in the ignition.

Sometimes disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reattaching it works.

If you don't have a 2nd key, you'll most likely have to tow it into a dealer.

Help

May be an intermittent electrical issue. Had similar problem. Mechanic first tuned up engine and later replaced fuel pump. Each time he assured me that it was fixed. But it wasn't (It did cost me about cost $900). Next time it happened, I punched the instrument panel (I read about people banging on the dash as well), turned the key, and it started right up. Removed instrument panel. Found poor connections between the top circuit board clips (mounted on the circuit boards) and the posts that they mechanically and electrically connected to. Removed board. Cleaned the posts and squeezed the clips together so that they would grab the posts better (the spring tension in the clips was weak, poor design), and put it all together. Did this a year ago. Starts up every time now. My mechanic didn't think this would work, but it did. Many mechanics are weak with electronics.
