Question about GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy that has a drop down tailgate (the glass lifts up and the tailgate drops down) I am unable to get the glass to release. When I push the release button on the dashboard you can hear a sound so I know there is power, the same applies when you try to open it from the outside, I am assuming there is a actuator or something that neds to be replaced. Is there a way to get the rear panel off without destroying it. I think if I can get the glass to release I can then get the tailgate to open which would allow me to get the panel off. Is there a way to do this? Thanks Bob

You should be able to use the key to open the hatch and lift gate then simply take the panel off and check to see whats not working. I believe its a plastic tab in there that breaks.

The rear glass on my 2000 chevy blazer won't release to open it what can i do to solve the problem?

there's a plastic actuator inside the tailgate that probably broke or at least came loose. You have to crawl into the back and release it. I ended up having to cut a little piece of carpet in the middle on the top of the tailgate area. Right where it fastens. You can manually release the glass with a screwdriver at that point. To replace the actuator, you need to take off the entire tailgate trim and metal underneath that to get to it. It sounds like a pain but trust me, not having the back glass be able to open or the tailgate area is much worse. It takes about 45 minutes to fix. The actuators are less than $10

93 gmc jimmy tailgate latch for glass & gate

Try the salvage yard first, chances are there going to be $10-15. the other place would be the dealer to get the inside tailgate panel.
Thank you for using fixya, and good luck.

2004 GMC Envoy XUV tailgate won't open downward. Tailgate will swing open but will not open downward. Nothing happens when pressing in on pressure pad/switch...it is as if there's no power going to it.

Do you live in a dusty area? My sister lives in dusty New Mexico and had a malfunctioning XUV tailgate. My reasoning was that something must tell the tailgate not to drop down if the glass is up, and if it can't tell, then it will only open sideways.
So we removed the trim panel, and the tailgate was indeed full of dust. By reaching my arm in, I found two plastic optical sensors which tell the gate whether the glass is up or down; both were coated with dust. After cleaning these the tailgate was back to its normal operation. The two sensors are flat, round - about the size of a nickel or dime...I couldn't see them, just found them by guessing that they must be there. Hope this helps!

My 1996 GMC jimmy wants to stall when I come to a stop. The RPM gage goes up & down then drops below 1000 RPMS and stalls.

I would go down to your local auto parts store and do an alternator and battery test. It sounds like at low rpms you are loosing volts. When you apply the brakes you would be supprised how much power from the engine it takes. You could also be loosing oil pressure. Check your oil level. When your engine drops low rpm, the oil pressure drops and shuts down the engine.

your Blazer or Jimmy will eventually burn out. when it does, there is really no way to open
the glass and lower the tailgate. The dash push button won't work, the rear key lock will
not work, the inside tailgat handle will not work, and you can not remove the interior
tailgate panel to access the mechanism because the screws can only be reach when
the tailgate is down (awesome GM design feature). The only way to replace the burnt
out actuator is to open the tailgate which you can't because the actuator is burnt out.

I've read stories that even the dealers don't know what to do, some have even cut up the
back panel to reach the so-called manuel release. Others said they pulled back the glued
on carpet to search for it also.

Well if you don't want to hack up the tailgate panel or rip out your carpet,
here's the easy way to open the glass:

You just pull back the interior tailgate panel right above the bump in the middle
where the latch is. There are no screws or bolts in that area, you can safely pull it back
about 2 inches. Then you'll have to stuck your finger in and push down the release bar.
See the 2 pictures below:

(No pictures allowed in this forum rolleyes.gif , oh well, click the links then)
The first pic is of the latch, it's the gold section.
The second pic shows what you need to push downward.
When you get your finger back there, you should be able to feel for the part that need to
be pushed down. When that part is pushed down, the glass has been unlocked.

Now that the glass is unlocked, it and the tailgate can be opened. Now you can remove the
interior tailgate panel, it has one screw on each side and easily lifts off.

The actuator that needs to be replaced costs $58 from the dealer, so if you don't want
to replace it yet, but still want to open the back, you can leave the panel off and just puch the
manuel release level. Here's the pic of the tailgate:

It's in the open section right below the latch, hows my fingure pushing it:

I haven't replaced my actuator yet, still trying to find it for cheaper than the dealer wants,
but hardly any part store guys know what the hell an actuator is

I'm having a similar problem with a 1997 GMC Jimmy. The glass won't open on the liftgate. I tried what the manual says for emergency release but nothing works. Does anyone have a suggestion or a picture of...
