What is the voltage at the battery with the engine running?

If it is below 13 volts than something is wrong with the alternator. Either it is not getting its exciter voltage on the small wire or the big wire is open between the alternator and the battery.

Replaced alternator but battery light stays on the dash

This light on dash is telling you, alternator is not charging or current is not reaching battery. With a voltmeter check your alternator output at battery. It should be at least 13.5 volts. If less than that check output at back of alternator, big red wire bolted to alternator. If voltage is within specs. then you may either have a blown fuse, open(broken) big red wire from alternator to baterry. Check big red wire circuit integrity by proving back of alternator where wire bolts to alternator. With the engine not running, there should be battery voltage at that bolt/wire. If no voltage repair open in circuit, either a fuse or broken wire( usually). If still no output(13.5 volts) or more, check power ground to alternator plug. If these power ground check out ok, then you more than likely have a defective alternator.

2000 Ford Taurus battery drain while driving. New alternator and battery stays charged in other vehicle. What is draining my battery.

Seen this "mystery drain" many times. Check spark at the battery to see how big the drain is. For this simple test, blow away any (explosive) battery charging fumes. Leave one terminal on and gently touch the other to its post in fairly dark surroundings. Then try it again with the wires taken off the alternator. Your spark is now probably much less. Usually bad diodes leaking electricity backwards through the alternator cause this drain. Replace the alternator or the diode pack inside it. Some mechanics recommend actually measuring the drain.... hahaha. OK whatever.

Why does my 96 Cadillac Eldorado battery keep discharging?

First step have the battery tested, a bad cell can cause a internal drain and kill the battery, if the batt is ok then check for interior lights like visors that stay on or interior light that come on by themselves at night due to defective door switches.

2000 pathfinder battery draining

Sounds like your alternator is doing nothing-the car is running only off the battery. Have your charging system checked-does your battery light stay lit? If that bulb is burnt out, that may be why the charging system is not working. On some charging systems, that bulb is crucial for the alternator to work.
Engine off, a fully charged battery should measure 12.5 volts with a voltmeter. Engine idling, and the voltmeter at the same battery should be showing about 13.5 volts. This tells you the charging system is working.

Replaced battery. still would not start. Cleaned treminal of all corrision. cranked fine. however 1 day later would not start. jump started . drove a couple of miles but when I turned on lights, engine...

Sounds like a bad alternator. Drained your battery and when you turned on the lights it took all the power left in your battery. When you drain a battery down that far, they are real hard to jump, and coupled with the alternator, the car is not producing enough current to start and stay running.

I would take the alternator off and take it to oyur local auto parts store to be tested. If bad, replace it and charge the battery fully before starting. Then check voltage at battery with motor running. Should be 13.2 -14 Volts DC. If not, you may have a bad battery cable or blown fusible link. (especially that if the alternator tests good).....Mike

Ford f350 super duty 6.0 deisel. batteries fully charge during operation, or off charger, but left for more than 4-5 hrs, won't start. Havr replaced primary battery to no effect. Have checked the batteries...

Hi well there is not anything wrong with the alternator, that is the correct charge, i would expect that with 1000 rpm at 14v, if that is on idle, it might actually be over charging the system, try revving it to 1000rpm or 1500rpm and take a reading then, if it stays the same there might be a fault with the regulator on the alternator if it drops below 13volts when revving the motor than you have an alternator fault it might be ok when on idel, but try some revv's and see what that gives you, also if after 4-5 hours you have a flat battery, try just leaving the volt meter on the battery and see how fast the drain is, it really could be allot of things, but a short is a good one to check for....hope this helps

Battery drains overnight. needs jumping off but other vehicle does not have to be cranked up to do this

First thing to do, is have your battery tested, to make sure it's in good shape, and if it is, have them check alternator is charging as well, then you'll have to do some investigating of where current draw is coming from. Anything new installed lately, as in custom stereo etc?

Battery won't stay charged while running. Alternator is fine tho.

It seems that your battery is not getting its charging amount from the rectifier which comes from the dynamo when the engine is in running condition. So just your rectifier and check the output of the dynamo to be sure thats OK............sodeep
