Question about 1997 Cadillac Eldorado

1 Answer

My 1997 Eldorado starts to overheat after about 35-45 mins after i start driving. New water pump, thermostat, and fresh coolant. No smoking that would indicate head problems. What have I missed?

There could be a problem with the radiator cooling fan(s), or the radiator could be plugged up, or there could be an engine vacuum leak.

Engine coolant temperture sensor, This sensor runs the cooling fans. Before that I would check fuses and relays to the fans.

I have a 2002 civic 1.4s and its starting to over heat only on a stop start mostly no grey smoke

Hey Steve,
Does it overheat when you drive at highway speed? If not, and only overheats during stop and go driving, then you might have:
1. A water pump going bad.
2. A thermostat that is going bad,
3. The radiator hoses are getting soft,,(Need replacing)
I would start by removing the thermostat and driving for a while and see if it clears up.. (this DOES NOT eliminate the water pump though, because its easier to pump coolant without a restriction), but this will help you with your diagnosis, If it stops overheating without the thermostat,, ok, now replace the thermostat (with a new one!) and drive again.. IF it starts over heating again, you need a water pump. ,,ALSO..while hot.. check the hoses for evidence of collapsing..replace if necessary..(they wear out from the inside.. there will be NO signs of wear from the outside! (I replace mine every 6 years NO MATTER!!!)

Are the cooling fans coming on ? Go under the hood in the engine compartment , with the vehicle running have some one turn on the A/C , do you see and or hear the cooling fans come on ? Could be the coolant temperature gauge is bad ! How many miles on the vehicle ? Ever have water pump replaced ?

1999 Cadillac eldorado overheating. Changed thermostat, still overheating now with white smoke coming from exhaust. Checked water pump belt, it is there and turning. Cold air blowing from heater, no heat.

coolant leaking into engine probably blown head gaskets. More damage will occur the more you drive it. Unfortunate and expensive repair on a northstar.

Keeps overheating. brand new thermostat, it has coolant. drives fine for bout 7 mins then starts to overheat.

This could be that your water pump is going bad because this pump lets new colder radiator fluids to circulate through the engine block to help it to not overheat. Another thing is your engine light come on when this happens? If your engine light came on that you should take this car right away to Advance Auto Parts store to check the OBD II codes. You also have to check to make sure that your radiator has fluid from the start so you know if there is any leaks.

Hello: Open hood, stand in front of car look on left side (driver side) of engine toward the radiator, there will be a black metal guard, under the guard there will be a small belt. This is the belt that drives the water pump. Make sure the belt is there. If belt is there start car and with engine running check to be sure belt is turning and that the water pump is turning. If all that is okay then you may have blown head gaskets. To check head gaskets you need a sniffer tool to smell the engine coolant which will tell you if you have exhaust gas in the coolant.

OK, check that the 2 fans are turning on when it gets to operating temperature. If not, replace the 3 or so relays that control the two speed fans on your car.If that doesn't solve the problem, then you may have to buy new fan motors and also have the harness replaced if necessary to make it cool reliably.

I had this problem on a 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine that overheated over 157 deg. F and went into its limp mode for cooling the engine off by allowing 1/2 of the cylinders to circulate fresh air into the engine in case all antifreeze would leak out or the car would overheat.

Don't run the Northstar engine too long, more than 45 min. at a time in this limp mode.

Good luck on this repair of your Northstar Engine.

yes, if the water pump is bad, input hose will be hot output hose will be cool, but that also could mean a bad thermostat.

a way to see if the water pump is pumping coolant is to remove the bleed screw on the thermostat housing and see if coolant spews out.

But it overheats. may as well change out the water pump and get rid of the original plastic impellers. While you're there, replace the thermostat with a 12 degree cooler one and drill 2 3/16" holes 180 degrees from each other in the thermostat.

2.8L motors are sensitive to overheating. you can bust a head gasket this way in no time. Also warp that long cylinder head.

I have a 1997 kia overheating i have removed the thermostat

You have to install a new Thermostat because if the motor has no water pump thermostat sends all the coolant to the radiator and therefore the engine never warmed and you will not have heat because the coolant never be heated
