The headlights are powered by the battery through the ignition switch. If they are not working properly than there is problem either in the ignition switch or with the connecting cables that may have partially damaged or the insulation may have worn out.

Turn ON headlights and try to start car.

Headlights stay lit, no change in brightness means an open relay.
Start car in Neutral, or move gear shift in and out of Park and try to start in Park; otherwise it is the ignition relay switch or the starter solenoid.

Headlights dim slightly: Low battery charge

Headlights dim significantly or shut off completely: Battery cable connections are really dirty. Remove cables from battery and clean cable clamps and battery posts. You may not need to boost to start.

Hope this helps!

Check the delay switch for your headlights. It may be shorting out and simply need replaced. Not cheap, but not all that expensive considering other repairs.

Headlights are wired to receive a constant "hot" even when your keys are out of the ignition. Your problem, more than likely, is in the switch. Depending on what type of switch you have, you can expect to pay between $20-$80 for a new one.
