Question about Ford Escape

1 Answer

Hi, I am considering a 2002 Ford Escape XLT with 72,000 miles. I have read differing experiences online...many people seem to love the car, who have had it from the beginning. but I also read where the car has had transmission failures, etc. I am bringing it to my mechanic today to check it out, who seems to recall that this vehicle has had issues with the computer needing re-programming. the history report is clean, the car is clean, and it seems to drive well. there is a sticker under the hood that says something like 'PCM reprogramming July 2004'. do you know what this means, and what would be your advice on whether to consider this car? thank you so much.

The PCM is the computer that keeps the engine and transmission functioning properly. It is really called a Powertrain Control Module. Having the computer replaced is nothing to worry about. If the engine is running strong and the transmission shifts ok, then the PCM is probably ok and nothing to worry about. If the PCM is having problems still, then the check engine light will be on. Your mechanic will be able to hook up the diagnostic tool to it and look at the vehicles past. If there are a bunch of codes in the history, there still could be problems.

2002 Ford Escape V6 XLT, problem w/ initial start in cold weather

Does the engine crank but just not start? Or... are you cycling the ignition switch without trying to crank the engine? Based on the information you have given, I would first guess that the fuel pump may be going out. I say this because when you first turn the key on the pump primes the engine with pressurized fuel. If the pump is getting old, it may take a few power cycles to get it going. You can test this theory by having somebody listen near the rear of the car while you turn the key on for the first time. The fuel pump make a faint, yet distinctive high pitch noise that can be heard when you turn the key on. Try that first. Next thing you would try is checking the relays for proper function... starting with the fuel pump relay. Good luck.

Hearing growling whine sound from passenger side front. Growling produces fast vibration (not shimmy). Sound increases on left hand turns. Sound more pronounced below 60 mph.

You need to replace your wheel bearing. Ford Escape bearings usually need changed around 80,000+ miles from my experience.
