Question about 1995 Jaguar XJ6
XJ6 idles at about 1400 out of gear and about 1000 in gear. It just started to do this. Any ideas?
There are several different sensors that can affect the idle speed and smoothness.
Unless you have the service manual and perhaps a multimeter, you will not be able to check them.
One thing you can do without the above, is check for decayed hoses under the hood.
A vacuum leak can cause a fast idle and this can happen if one of the vacuum hoses is only cracked so careful inspection is required. Look for hoses no longer smooth and showing any checking of their surface.
With the engine running, disturbing hoses that are about 8-10 cm (~ 3/8-3/4") in diameter may cause the idle to change too which would then tell you which of the hoses is defective.
