Hi there!

Check you are getting a live feed to the starter solenoid (small wire on the starter) If you are, you need to strip the starter off it and find a replacement.
It is probably the starter solenoid - (which is non-repairable) that has stuck.

As a test, try hitting the starter motor with a length of wood. If it then works, then look for a replacement as it WILL do this again , and again untill replaced.

If you are not getting a live feed to the starter, or this doesn't work - please contact me again for further assistance.

If this results in a solution for you. Please take the time to rate as a Fixya.
Thanks.

Can a car with a broken starter motor be jump started?

If it's the starter motor itself that's knackered it won't start with anything, other than a bump start. Jumping won't knacker the battery though, and if the starter is seized it just won't turn over. Hook it up and give it a go, it won't do any harm. Worst case only give it five or six turns. If it turns over' at all' it's going to be fine.

Car wont start after leaving key in ignition,ie went to start car, but phone rang, key in ignition, now wont start.this has happened my wife on several occasions. starts fine on a push

Check the fuse box for the starter relay, and pull out to check pins for corrosion / bad contact. The fact it start on a bump with the key on leads me to suspect the start / crank position of the electrics. Get a knowledgeable person to run through the crank circuit with a meter, also check the condition of earth straps and starter cables. Could be the ignition switch is faulty?

Ok 03 Yukon, at first not running but after being towed home it hit a bump and all the lights came on. Took it off the wrecker it started right up, but nothing electrical in cab works, and now it won'

It might possibly be the ignition switch, or the linkage to it.

They reason I suspect this is your statement, "I bumped the key forward and it will engage the starter but still wont shut off"

The part where you insert the key is really a "cylinder lock", that then transfers the turning motion to the actual "ignition switch"

My wife had a Pontiac (also a GM product) that the cylinder lock had a linkage that went to the ignition switch (similar to a sliding electric switch, with the 4 positions, ACC, OFF, RUN, START), which was bolted on further down the steering column, underneath the plastic covering on the column.

Another person here had a similar problem, and after suggesting this, he wrote back that he removed his steering column cover and found a screw opposite the cylinder lock that had loosened and fallen out.

So you could try removing the steering column cover and see if all is ok.

Also, when you have it opened up, observe the action as you turn the key, as the problem could be the cylinder lock itself.

Car not starting turn key nothing happens has power

There should be a starter relay under the hood in the fuse box, get someone to bump the key and listen for it to close the circuit. the description should say PCM/ECM/STARTER something along those lines. If it doesn't click you may want to swap it for another in the fuse panel and retry. Be sure to check the fuse for the start circuit. The starter circuit is control by a module so there is no direct wire from the ignition switch straight to the starter. If you hear it click then you may want to use a test light and check for voltage at the starter (small wire on solenoid) while someone else bumps the key.

When you say 'it bumped the starter but did not turn the engine over' and 'it bangs the starter' it sounds like you mean it hits the flywheel and will not turn the engine. If it engages and does not turn the motor you need to try to manually turn both directions. Do not have the key in the ignition. If it won't turn you may have a froze up motor.
If you mean the starter spins freely but won't engage the engine - than you need a new starter. Let us know what you find out.

If when you turn the key to start and the solenoid wire (small wire) gets current, check and make sure you have a good ground. If you do the starter is bad. Replace the starter and your problem will be solved.

Rock your car back and forth. The starter is stuck between teeth. I had a jeep that had the same problem. It had teeth missing on the starter motor. This seemed to do the trick

Check all of the battery terminals and cables and check the wires on the starter/selonoid, start from the battery and follow the cable out and check all conections , clean and tighten them and if it still does it the starter/selonoid is bad and needs replacement...

thanks
