Having problems getting to a bolt near the rear of the oil pan.This bolt is larger than the rest!

GM SAID CADILLACS FROM 1993 TO 1999 YOU HAVE TO REMOVE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION TO REMOVE OIL PAN.SOME BACK BOLTS WILL BE HARD TO GET TO.

How do i replace a oil housing gasket on a 2000 3.8 grand prix?


You'll need new gasket for oil pan,,,proper socket and drive to fit the bolts around circumference of pan.scraper and new oil or catch pan to save old oil, approx 5 qts . 1/ Begin by draining oil....drain plug on lower part of pan..get that wrench also.....it is larger than bolts arund pan......2/after drained, put drain plug back in and tighten snugly. not too tite......3/remove pan by removing all the nuts around pan, dislodge pan from it's seal , may takea little tender tapping with rubber mallet to release the pan, do not pry at lip, you may damage pan....4/ Clean both sealing surfaces of old gasket.....5/ dampen new gasket with oil and put it on pan in proper position, ....6/put bolts back in pan one on each side to hold pan up,,,put rest of bolts in pan and tighten in random pattern around pan trying to keep pan even at mating to engine.....7/when pan is on and fairly snug, fill the oil into filler at proper fill neck w proper amt of oil. about 5 qts,U.S......Make sure drain plug is not dripping, if so, put a little more torque on it. Not too much,they are prone to strip. Done. Or, about 40 dollars at oil change place.

How do I replace oil pan gasket?


Do that one or get that done on a lift. If not.... drain the oil & filter, every drop. In a gentle sequence loosen remove every other oil pan bolt . Next loosen, don't remove, the rest of the & slowly take out 1 fm the ft 1 fm the rear, 1 fm the side & keep going until they are all loosen enough to totally remove. The pan may fall by its own weight, if not, a few taps with no bolts will cause it to drop. Work it off around the oil pump & float, remove the gasket when the pan is down clean the engine block of gasket & oil & reinstall the new gasket. I'm not saying your gasket isn't leaking, but I've had many requests to replace pan gaskets & the front or rear seal is leaking. Besides the fact without a lift, power tools & an oil drain, this one is a rough one. Have it Done! Good luck

How to change oil pan galant


its much easier with a lift but can be done on the ground with jack stands... raise car and drain oil, remove exhaust from manifold and cat, remove brackets from engine to ****** to gain access to al oil ban bolts... if you have a split oil pan then more work is involved....split pans have a 21/2 inch steel stamped lower pan bolted to a larger aluminum sub pan... doing just the lower pan is easy upper pan requires more work.....

Do i have to drop the frontend to pull the oil pan 2000 Z71 silverado


Hey Phil,
I own a 98 silverado and just had to drop the pan this weekend. The first thing you will need to do is diconnect the battery, un-bolt the starter, ****** strut arms, fly wheel cover and un-bolt all the oil pan bolts. (I also had to remove the oil filter and adapter cause there was one oil pan bolt I could not get to.) The next step is to pull both motor mount bolts and raise the motor up with a cherry picker. I slipped two 2x4 blocks under the motor to rest on the motor mounts.

I hope this was helpful and you were able to get your oil pan off. I know its alot to do as the MFG was not thinking when they built them or somthing.

How difficult is it to change the oil pan on a 1997 gmc jimmy 4x4?


4WD To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Oil level indicator
    • Front differential assembly
    • Starter
    • Transmission cover
    • Oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil into a suitable container
    • Remote oil filter pipe adapter
    • Remote oil filter hose clip bolt on oil pan
    • Starter wire harness bracket stud
    • Transmission oil cooler pipes (if equipped)
    • Access plugs for oil pan rear nuts
    • Transmission to oil pan bolts
    • Oil pan nuts and bolts gm_truck_43_ol-pn_ol-lvl-snsr.gif

      NOTE: The low oil level sensor is not reusable.
    • Remove and discard the engine oil level sensor (if applicable) gm_truck_43_ol-pn_blts.gif

    • The oil pan
    • The oil pan gasket
  2. Discard the oil pan gasket.
  3. Clean all sealing surfaces on the engine and the oil pan.
To Install:
Note: Whenever the transmission and the engine oil pan are removed from the engine at the same time install the transmission before the oil pan. This is to allow for the proper oil pan alignment. Failure to achieve the correct oil pan alignment can result in transmission failure.
  1. Apply a 0.197 inch (5 mm) wide and 1.0 inch (25 mm) long bead of adhesive GM P/N 12346141 (Canadian P/N 10953433) or equivalent to both the right and left sides of the engine front cover to engine block junction at the oil pan sealing surfaces. gm_truck_43_ol-pn_ahsv_loc_f.gif

  2. Apply a 0.197 inch (5 mm) wide and 1.0 inch (25 mm) long bead of adhesive GM P/N 12346141 (Canadian P/N 10953433) or equivalent to both the right and left sides of the crankshaft rear oil seal housing to engine block junction at the oil pan sealing surfaces. Note: Always install a new oil pan gasket. The oil pan gasket and oil pan must be installed and the fasteners tightened while the adhesive is still wet to the touch.
  3. Install the new oil pan gasket into the groove in the oil pan. Note: The oil pan alignment must always be flush or forward no more than 0.011 inch (0.3mm) from the rear face of the engine block.
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • The oil pan onto the engine block
      1. Press the oil pan gasket into the grooves of the engine front cover and crankshaft rear oil seal housing
      2. Slide the oil pan back against a suitable straight edge
    • The oil pan bolts and nuts, but do not tighten
  5. Measure the pan-to-transmission housing clearance using a feeler gage and a straight edge. gm_truck_43_ol-pn_trnz_clrc.gif

    • Use a feeler gage to check the clearance between the oil pan-to-transmission housing measurement points
      1. If the clearance exceeds 0.011 inch 0.3mm) at any of the 3 oil pan-to-transmission housing measurement points (A), then repeat the step until the oil pan-to-transmission housing clearance is within the specification
      2. The oil pan must always be forward of the rear face of the engine block

  6. Tighten the oil pan bolts and nuts in sequence
    • Torque to: 18 ft lb (25 Nm).
  7. Measure the clearance between the 3 oil pan-to-transmission housing measurement points in order to ensure proper alignment.
  8. Install or connect the following:
    • A new oil pan drain plug seal (O-ring) onto the oil pan drain plug
    • Oil pan drain plug into the oil pan
      1. Torque to: 18 ft lb (25 Nm)
      NOTE: The low oil level sensor is not reusable.

    • New low oil level sensor
      1. Torque to: 115 in lb (13 Nm)
    • Transmission to oil pan bolts.
      1. Torque to: 35 ft lb (47 Nm)
    • Access plugs for the oil pan rear nuts
    • Starter wire harness bracket stud
    • Transmission oil cooler pipes (if equipped)
    • Remote oil filter pipe adapter
    • Oil filter hose clip bolt to the oil pan
    • Transmission cover and bolts.
    • Starter motor
    • Front differential assembly
    • Oil level indicator
  9. Fill the engine with oil.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

no drain plug on automatic trans loosen all bolts around pan remove rear and half of the side bolts[have catch pan under trans]lightly pry rear of pan will drop down and start draining once most fluid out start removing rest of bolts careful not to let pan lip bend

When you say fluid ... I assume you talking about the oil and oil filter.
If you changing oil here are the steps :
1> Jack up the car, make sure you do not put the jack on the oil pan as it is most likely it will damage the oil pan.. rather put it on the frame which is little bit to the left of the oil pan. Trace the bolt to the rear of the oil pan.. I believe it is a 17mm bolt. Place the oil pan under the bolt and take the bolt off. Almost all your oil will drain out here. Make sure the oil cap on top of the valve cover is taken off.
2> About 10 inches to the top of the oil pan bolt .. you will find the oil filter. Usually you should be able to remove it with your hand, rotating it in an anticlockwise direction. The rest of the oil will drain out here.. so adjust the oil catcher pan accordingly.
3> Take the new oil filter and apply some of the old oil on the rubber gasket of the oil filter and tighten it back up in clock wise direction.
4>Tighten the bolt to the oil pan and lower the car from the jack or jack stand for easier access.
5> Put in 4 quarts of 5W30 or 10 W 40 through the oil cap on the valve cover.
6> Wait a few minutes and pull the car back a few feet. Check for leaks and you should be good to go.

Need torque specs for oil pan gasket


There likely is a spec for oil pan but unless you are a finatic, you really don't need to know what it is. Simple rule: Don't crank down ******* any fastener. If corners near crank ends have larger fasteners, you can tighten them a bit more than on siderails. Before tightening anything, install all bolts finger tight, to ensure that they are not cross threaded. To avoid warping pan, tighten from the center of the pan, working towards both ends, alternating from side to side as you go. When you are finished, go over it again, using the same amount of force on each bolt. As I said, end bolts can if larger in diameter, be tightened more but be careful not to tighten so much that you will either split or push the gasket out the sides.. Anywhere two gasket ends **** together, I recommend using a sensor -safe dab of silicone. An oil pan is not under any mechanical stress or pressure. I have used this method for many years and NEVER had one leak. If you really need #s, small fasteners get about 12-15in lbs, larger ones about 20.
