Question about 2000 Lexus ES 300

1 Answer

When I start my car sometimes it idols low and cuts off I have to rev up the engine just to keep it on and put the car into gear. On the way home I only had to press the gas pedal twice because it would accelerate by itself and when I got stopped the rpms were between 3 and 4 and the engine sounded louder than usual and was making a winding noise. what could be wrong and how can I fix it?

Sounds like either a fuel filter issue or a problem with a MAF (mass air flow) sensor.

Seems like your are describing a outboard motor. If so, the Boat section of Fixya may have more experts that you need. You would want to avoid turning any screws on the carburetor body. The externals on the linkage have some adjustments like throttle stops.

The linkage on boat shift mechanisms are tempermental. They usually combine 2 functions on 1 control lever. They are synchronized that when the transmission shifts from neutral to forward and neutral to reverse the idle speed is low. This keeps the gears from grinding and takes the shock out of the shifting process.

Another thing different than on a car engine is the effect of the propeller on engine rpm. You can change the "in gear"
rpm for both directions by changing prop size and/or pitch.
This also means you can over-rev the engine by having the wrong prop on the boat. There are engine rpm "stops" for the high end too, but some just rely on using the correct prop. As what you may be experiencing with a "stall" can be brought on by

A word of caution. The inboard/outboard engines can have the same problem as outboard engines. The shift levers are synchronized with a pivot system and adjusting the throttle can interfere with the shifting.

Why does the engine revs drop too low and sometimes stalling when I engage any gear?

This can be either an engine management issue (bad idle air control) or a transmission issue if an automatic trans (torque converter lock up problem). Idle air control can often be cleaned so = cheap fix. Trans problem not so easy.

2000 Ford E-150, engine was struggling to rev and then engine and all electrics cut out coasted to a stop. Started up again no problem but engine would not rev up and as a result the van drove very slowly...

Hi, I recommend you take the exhaust pipes loose from the exhaust manifolds to see if your exhaust is clogged. Start the truck--it will be loud. See if it will rev with the exhaust pipes loose. If yes, take the truck to a muffler shop to figure out if your converters or the muffler is clogged.
If it isn't a clogged exhaust, it may be that your timing belt/chain has jumped. We can check that next if the exhaust is open. It's a little harder to do, and your problem sounds more like a clog to me. I'll be here to answer your questions either way you decide to go.

Vw polo 1997 999cc often idles eratically

First- lets change engine coolant sensor/ECT/ and you will be very surprised.Black head with four pins.Be very carefull when change it because there is pressure into coolant system.First-open slowly the cap of engine coolant tank. Then tighten again to safe coolant.Unplug the sensor, remove the pin and pull out the sensor. If the "O"ring/old one/ is still inside-take it out.

check the fluid and all the wiring plugs going to the transmission.it is not uncommon for oil to drip onto a plug and cause bad readings,or vacuum lines that are cracked.
