I would definitely check the fluid level in the transfer case first. If that's OK, it MAY be the tires.

Is there a bearing or bushing on the shaft that the left axle slides onto on a 1999 Bonneville se?

i have been fooled by this one way to many times. when a wheel bearing or hub assesembly is making noise, it will sound like it is comming from the other side. i do not know why this is. but one test will prove if and which one. when growling noise occurs, notice, when turning left or right, does noise get louder and quieter as you turn? if so then it is wheel bearing. when turning left the right side will make more noise. when turning right the left side will make more noise. if always the same then, tires or transmission need addressing. the cv axle does not make a growling noise, unless front wheel drive car does not move, it makes a clicking or poping noise. sorry but at least you dont have to replace other axle

How to replace cv boot

Sounds like the CV joint. Maybe you just don't hear it when you are on the road turning. It would be a constant clicking sound, not just a single click-the steel balls inside the cage of the joint wear and get too loose and make that clicking as turning or acceleration puts stress on the joint.
The fix is to replace the joint, so the axle shaft has to be removed from car. FYI, parts stores sell remanufactured axles complete with both inspected and re-booted joints on each end, and ready to install. The cost is not too expensive-cheaper than one new CV joint costs.

Can bad axel cause front end shake

yes. if the axle is bad and binding it can cause the front end to vibrate because it gets out of balance.

Hi, have you checked the tire and front end parts along with the alignment? i have had problems with tires cupping and vibrating from bad tie rods and ball joints.

My car makes a bad growling noise. Everyone said that it was a front wheel bearing because that tire was worn down really bad on the outside. I replaced the passenger front wheel bearing, and it is still...

WHEEL BEARING USUALLY STARTS MAKING A ROARING TYPE NOISE WHICH USUALLY GETS LOUDER THE FASTER YOU DRIVE, SOMETIMES THEY WILL BE LOOSE , TO CHECK JACK UP THAT WHEEL AND GRAB TOP AND BOTTOM OF TIRE AND SHAKE, IF THERE IS MOVEMENT, TRY TO GET SOMEONE TO ROCK TIRE FOR YPU AND WATCH WHERE AXLE GOES INTO CENTER OF BEARING AND SEE IF AXLE IS MOVING WITH TIRE MOVEMENT AND SPINDLE REMAINS STATIONARY, THEN IT IS BAD BEARING, OR SOMETIMES THERE WILL BE NO MOVEMENT, THEN BLOCK REAR WHEELS AND RUN CAR WITH THAT WHEEL IN AIR AND SEE IF YOU HEAR NOISE, GOOD LUCK.

Noise in front end 2002 zr2 blazer

Two things maybe your problem:1 .Front axle actuator to engage 4wd is not releasing. 2. Front axle u-joint needs replacing. Lift car on jacks with front end off ground. Then spin tires by hand as fast as you can and see if you hear the noise and where it is coming from ( spin in both directions).

Saturn SL1, growling and vibration coming from right front wheel,

Might be a hub bearing. Those make a growling noise when they are bad. When it is on jack stands you should be able to put your hands on the top of the tire and the bottom of the tire and move it back and forth. and the same with putting your hands on the right and left side of the tire. if you can and it moves back and forth then the bearing is back. but becarefull not to get the movement confused with a bad ball joint or tire rod. which could also be your problem but they dont make a growling noise
