Question about 1994 BMW 3 Series

1 Answer

Just bought the car yesterday and checked the oil, but I'm not sure where should the oil line be on the oil stick? The oil stick is unlike anything I've seen before. Thanks.

Does it have a plastic coating at the bottom of the stick? If so I think where that ends is the mark.

It's a three-tier dipstick where each tier is a different angle. It looks like it may be a quart low but, as I said, I've never seen a dipstick like this before.

Never worked on one so I wouldn't know. Seems there should be some sort of line or something on the first inch or two of the stick.

Why would the transmission blowback from where you put the transmission fluid in

The most likely scenario is that it is foaming or is overfull.

Are you checking the oil level when the motor and trans are warm/ hot, the car is idling on a level surface? If you are adding trans fluid when the car is off and cold you are very likely overfilling it . If you are checking the oil level when the vehicle is idleing and warm and it is still blowing out of the dip stick tube , then check what the transfluid looks and smells like. It should be pink to light red and not smell "burnt".

Let the vehicle cool off, ( overnight) . Pull the stick and see if there is anything on the stick. If not, add fluid until it is just on the tip of the stick. If when cold the oil is on the stick, has a good appearance and is any where near the fill lines proceed to next step. If the oil is above the fill and full lines it is overfull and will foam up in operation. The excess oil must be drained.
Start the car and allow it to idle until it is warm. Pull the trans stick back out and see where the oil is on the stick. When warm and idling it should be in the area between add and full. if it's over those lines when warm, it's over full and needs to be drained to the correct level.

If the oil has a milky appearance it is contaminated with water or other substance; you need to take the car for service. It is likely the coolant from the radiator and the oil cooler for the trans have been leaking by contaminating each other. Both systems will need to be completely cleaned and the source of the leak will need to be fixed before the car is used again.

I have a 02 Jetta2.0l. Yesterday after I changed the oil and put a new filter on I took the car for a ride. Then all of sudden the dashboard light came on. It is saying that the passenger door Is open when...

i believe that the door ajar switch is built in to the latch mechanizm on the jetta, first i would try spraying the latch with wd40 or another lubricant and opening and closing door several times to see if switch is sticking oiling it may help to unstick switch, if not you will have to replace latch

Where do you add transmission fluid to a 96 ford thunderbird

look around near the firewall for another 'dip-stick', similar to your oil dip-stick, you check and add fluid into the same place. and you will want to check the fluid level when the engine is warmed up, and running. (unlike checking the oil) also, a funnel is recommended (dont want to spill fluid around) if you see the need to add fluid

How to do a oil change

Pull the drain plug, change the oil filter, replace the drain plug. Add oil until the dipstick reads full. Start the engine and make sure the oil light goes out. Check for leaks around the oil filter with the car running. Recheck the oil level, add as necessary. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using!

Transmission slipping on 03 GMC Envoy. what does iy mean when trans fluid measure high on dip stick?

Two things: #1 someone has overfilled it by mistake thinking they were putting oil in the engine. Yes I have seen this.
#2 The transmission cooler in the radiator could be leaking antifreeze into the transmission through the cooling line raising the fluid level. I would look for milk shake foam on the dip stick and make sure you check trans in park and not neutral.

2006 vw passat. screen says stop! warning low oil. engine off ? what does that mean? Also servive engine now! I just bought the car yesterday and it has no owners manual. I did notice what looked like...

First, check your engine oil level , while on level ground, add if it's low. (The oil viscosity should be labeled on the oil filler cap) Blue smoke is a sign of burning oil, not a good sign. White smoke is a sign of coolant mixing with your engine oil, a worse sign.
Your computer is telling you to check your oil, so do it, or get it done.
If your oil is low, top it off and keep checking it regularly to see if your engine is consuming it. If it is, I would recommend getting it looked at for either a leak, or low compression. (Worn out piston rings will cause oil consumption and poor performance.)

Where do I add transmission fluid for my 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitari?

You'll have two dip sticks under your hood on the engine. One will be for oil the other for tansmission fluid. You can tell you have the transmission because the fluid is a bright redish color where as the oil should be clearish or black, Denpending on your last oil change. The dip sticks are usually on opisit sides or the engine from eachother but could be on the same side. To check your transmission fluid then you need the emergency brake on and the car in neutral and the motor running. On the dip stick there is notches or tiny lines telling you how much is in it. Here;s a very important point to remember. Transmissipon fluid is checked and measured by pints unlike the oil dip stick which is in quarts. So the marks on the dip stick for the tranny will be one pint per mark. To add transmission fluid they sell a skinny long tube funnel that goes directly into the stem that holds the dip stick. You must shut the engine off to add the fluid and restart it in neutral to recheck it. I hope I have been of some service to you and please be kind with your thumbs up for me. good Luck, Raz

2003 pontiac bonneville. I discovered my oil

ok, if you havent added any oil to it, the only thing I can think of is you blew a head gasket, and you have radiator fluid mixed with your oil, hence the high oil pressure. Pull your dip stick and check your oil that way, to ensure proper oil levels and to check if you do or do not have coolant in the oil, another way to check is to see if you have oil in your coolant, once the seal on the gasket is broken oil and coolant dont have anything preventing them from mixing.

Add enough oil to get the stick reading back to the full line. Oil can't either you are burning it or leaking . If you used more than two quarts in 400 miles, if it's burning it it definitely should be fouling plugs and smoking. If leaking, there has to be wet oil under the engine somewhere. Check everything over again to verify either condition.
