Question about 1987 Chevrolet El Camino

1 Answer

84 el camino, the running lights started poping fuses, 20 amps. After checking behind the light switch, found the harness had been hot over the years. Changed the harness, no changes; still no running lights. The head lights come on, no problem. Now the dashboard lights stay on. The brown wire on the light switch should be hot, its not. The inside fan, A/C or Heat doesn't come on. What's happening with the electrical system.

The blinkers dont work in my 83 el camino. i replaced the switch in the column and checked all fuses and relays. everythings good. hazzards work also horn. all of witch is in the turn signal switch. need...

Did you recently put wider than stock tires on your car? The wiring harness for the rear lights runs down the outside of the drivers side frame rail, wider tires will rub on the harness and cause damage to it and subsequent light failures.

The blinkers and running lights keep blowing fuses

Could be a shorted directional switch, incorrect bulbs, or very rare, but can happen, check bulb filaments to make sure one has not broken and is contacting the other inside the bulbs. Make sure that the under-car harness has not worn through or burned onto an exhaust pipe as well.
Wire tracing on those is time consuming but not terribly difficult... there are no lighting control modules to contend with. Try to narrow down the problem by noting exactly what you turned on when the fuse blows.
Good luck

Rear lights not working

start by checking all fuses first, then check bulbs, then remove headlamp switch and check for power going in and coming out , the coming out is when you turn switch on, start there good luck hope this helps.

1980 el camino---brake problems

Fuse should be under dash on left side. Providing that there is power there and power at the signal switch (and bulbs are good) likely there is a problem in the signal switch.

I dont think my vac.secondaries are working and i think a vac.line is hooked up wrong its a quadrajet 4bbl on a stock 305 in an 84 el camino

On the R.H side of the carb behind the automatic choke down on the rear throttle shaft there is a pin running thru the shaft with a lever that will lock it out. If the choke is not fully open or the weight behind the auto choke is not dropping the lever will not relase the secondaries to open.
