Question about 1987 Nissan Pickup

1 Answer

I have a 87 nissan with the z24i. i just bought it from original owner. its been sitting in a garage for 6 years now because while trying to jump start it he crossed up cables and fryed the fusable link on possitive cable. i fixed that and now am having problems with the fuel filling up the cylinders. would that be a problem with the ECU? or is it just that the fuel injectors are stuck open? and where is the engine control unit at under dash?

1 Answer

Check the injectors
If 12 volts got to them, their toast.

Check across the terminals, you will have to check other sites for the OHM readings
Check pin to body for short

You may have damaged the ecu, don't know, without seeing a wiring diagram and doing some testing

If you still need it, here 'ya go:

Is this one of the greatest vehicles of all time or what? Well over 300,000 miles and still have 175 lbs. compression all 4 cylinders - not 1 lb difference and 28-30 MPG to boot. That's why they stopped making the Z24i :).

87 Nissan d21 Z24I Why does unplugging the E3 let the motor turn over and start, when it won't when E3 is plugged in?

Yeah, try swapping the plug wires on 3 and 4. Make the firing order 1,4,3,2. That may be your problem.

I have a 1987 nissan pick up d-21 with the 3.5 DOHC engine and a 5 speed manual trans in this 4X4 I am pulling the engine out, do i have to pull the trans ? or can i oull just the engine? The oil pan seems...

I don't recall what those are like under there but things I have done to leave the transmission in are,
Pull the drive shafts and unbolt the transmission mount so it can be slid back but left in the truck.
Unbolt the mount (or leave it bolted if it will move enough) so the transmission still sits on it but jack the front of it up while lifting the motor so it can be pulled out of the trans enough to clear the input shaft.
Sometimes they take a little pull the motor forward and inch and then lift and inch then pull forward another inch and then lift another inch.....

Good luck on your swap. I was just doing the head on a 87 Nissan D21 with the Z24i and was looking for a later donar with ported injection for it instead of that TB injection also.

How do u set distributor in time on 89 Nissan z24 engine

If the sticker is still under the hood it has the answer on it.
I just did some work on an 87 Z24i,
Find the notch on the crank shaft pully and mark it with some bright paint.
Start and warm the engine so it is at operating temp.
Loosen the hold down bolt for the distributor (10mm)
Hook a timing light to the #1 intake side wire. (the cap also should have "I1" on it.)
hold the timing light so it shines on the pointed and the crank pully and turn the distributor until the marks are aligned where they should be. (the 87 California specs is 10 degrees).
Tighten the bolt and its set.

The distributor only has so much movement due to the slotted hole for the hold down bolt.
If it does not reach the timing specs it may be due to timing chain stretch. The cam gear has three holes in it to compensate for this. That is a little more work to do but if needed just come back to this and I can help you.

Need engine size in Nissan pickup

It is either a Z24i, or a KA24E. You should find the identification number on the left side of the block at the rear. It should say what size it is.

Rev counter not working

Suggest that you look for the ground wire of the tachometer gauge. It maybe disconnected. Or else the gauge itself is destroyed.

You'll have to pull the radio out and get the serial numbers off of it. You can then call a GM dealer (since they bought out Geo) and see if they can get you the unlock code for the radio.
