Car won't shift from park

Even with the brake down, etc. the car won't shift out of park without using the emergency key unlock. The Toyota dealer here has assured me that they will "try" to fix it but they don't work on many Daewoos. This, of course, made me very confident so I thought I'd ask the experts what they think I should do. Thanks!! Patti

Why not try using some more fluid for the car

Hey, my car does the same thing, so I stopped using park. To park I would put the car in neutral and pull the emergency brake. After a few months of this it just fixed itself. It still does it on occasion and eventually starts working right again. If you have another key that is similar in size push it in the slot by the shifter and hold your brake in, this will unlock it. I also put 6 bottles of transmission fluid in mine, because it was so low. Hope this helps

Shifter interlock

what car, you never said? NOR YEAR?
park lock out feature;. its broken , they do that. (BTSI system)
got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

no car/year, you get the generic answer.
there is a park lockout DEFEATER on most cars, (never on new cars, due to federal bs)

on the shift console, see the defeat device.
the operators guide covers this. its for EMERGENCIES.
pick one.
http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/jeep/

the A/T box,
Brakes + handle button press, unlocks BTSI

on 2005 and up , no bypass
if the key gets locked too, that tells you what is bad , on newer jeeps
on newer jeeps read this
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=366251

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.
Folks in Sanfranciso, just roll eyes at you, new in town>?

now the grand cherroke,, why not post car model, and year, dang.

quote 2010 oper guide, get one.
Brake/Transmission Interlock Manual Override Your vehicle may be equipped with a shift lock manual override. The manual override may be used in the event that the shift lever should fail to move from PARK with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal pressed. To operate the shift lock manual override, perform the following steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. 2. Firmly set the parking brake. 3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully remove the shift lock manual override cover, which is located on the PRNDL bezel. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. Using the screwdriver, reach into the manual override opening. Press and hold the shift lock lever down. Interlock Manual Override end quote.
no all jeeps have this,

Car won't shift out of park

It osunds like the shift interlock solenoid is not unlocking when you step on the brake, do you hear a click nosie?

Try the emergency bypass. turn key to OFF, step on brake, shift out of park into neutral. Then start car and drive away. do not put back in park until you get to destination. Or you will have to shut off, turn key to OFF, and apply brake, and shift to neutral again.

report back. check all fuses. see chart in owner manaul

My tailkights are not working at all. My Park in the car is stuck and won;t come down with motor started.

turn engine off. Turn key to OFF position, (no lights on dash lit). Step on brake, pull shift lever to neutral. start car, put in drive and go. this is emergency bypass.

When the key is ON, the shift lock soneoid is engaged and won't release till the brake is applied. Since you don't have brake lights, it means the solenoid won't unlock.
check for a blown fuse or a bad brake switch on the brake pedal.

OFF is the first click clockwise from LOCK. it goes, LOCK, OFF, ON, START.

The shift is lock i need to know how to unlock it ??

you have shift solenoid fuse out or brake switch (If brake lights also don't work).

For emergency, turn igniton key to "OFF" position. The step on brake pedal and pull shifter out of park. Start car in neutral.
The next time you put it in park, you will have to repeat process. See process in owner manual.

Gear shift has locked up

sounds like brake shift interlock solenoid is bad. try doing this emergency bypass. Turn key to off position, no lights on cluster. step on brake, pull shifter out of park to neutral. start car & drive away without putting it in park. see owner manul for better description.

The T-Handle will not come out of Park, unless I use a screwdriver to by-pass the Shift Lock Solenoid.I replaced the Shift Lock Solenoid, and it's still the same.Any ideas?Better still-is there a way to...

There's a plunger switch on the brake pedal arm up above the pedal. It probably isn't working now. There will be a way to move it as an adjustment, which you can try to see if you can realign it. If that doesn't work you can replace it, or just jumper the two wires on the switch itself to effectively permanently close it. Then the interlock will be disabled and you won't have to push the pedal down to take the car out of Park.
