Torque covertertor and fly wheel have been changed. Now when you gain speed and the truck shifts from low to high it sounds like ice in blender not as loud and only last for a couple seconds. It is a 1999 f250 super duty

Principles of Operation
Transfer Case - Electronic Shift
The four-wheel drive, electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, and 4X4 LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through the mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators, one for 4X4 HIGH which is 4X4, and one for 4X4 LOW which is LOW RANGE (in 4X4 LOW both the lamps are on). Shifts into 4X4 HIGH can be made at any speed. When shifting into 4X4 HIGH with the vehicle stationary, tooth blockage may occur, preventing shift completion. When the vehicle is driven above 8 km/h (5mph) the shift will complete. When shifting in or out of 4X4 LOW, the generic electronic module (GEM) requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manual transmission). (The digital transmission range [TR] sensor informs the GEM when the automatic transmission is in the NEUTRAL range position.)
The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and the range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD range positions.
The GEM uses two relays to control the gearmotor encoder assembly shift between 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD modes. The GEM controls the pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid which supplies engagement and disengagement vacuum to control the hublocks.
The GEM accomplishes shifts by interpreting inputs from:
  • mode select switch (MSS)
  • vehicle speed signal (transmitted from the ABS system)
  • gearmotor encoder plate position
  • brake pedal switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission)
  • clutch pedal position (CPP) switch (manual transmission)
  • ignition switch
Based on these inputs, the GEM controls the shifts into 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, or 4X4 LOW with the following outputs:
  • low to high relay (clockwise)
  • high to low relay (counterclockwise)
  • pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid
  • gearmotor encoder assembly
The electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) system has a feature which allows the driver to override the vacuum operated hublocks. When the front hublocks are manually turned to the LOCK position, the hublocks are locked at all times, overriding the vacuum operated system. If the front hublocks are manually turned to the AUTO position, the hublocks can only be locked by turning the MSS to 4X4 HIGH or 4X4 LOW position.

The NV236 transfer case is an automatic transfer case with three drive ranges. Shifting from rear wheel drive to four wheel drive is done automatically when the transfer case shift control module receives wheel rotating slip information from the speed sensors. The transfer case shift control module then engages the transfer case motor/encoder to position the transfer case from rear to four wheel drive. When the transfer case shift control module receives information that the wheel rotation is the same on both axles, the transfer case shift control module sends position information to the motor/encoder to put the transfer case back into rear wheel drive. The three drive ranges are 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. The 2HI position is for normal driving with the rear wheels pushing the vehicle. The 4HI, position is for driving through sand, snow, mud, gravel, or heavy rain at normal or slightly below normal speeds. The 4HI engages the front axle to allow for four wheel drive. The front axle is pulling the vehicle, and the rear axle is pushing the vehicle. The 4LO range is used for off road driving, heavy snow, deep mud, or shallow fording. The 4LO is similar to the 4HI except that the gearing in the transfer case is set for low speed and high torque. The NV236 is manufactured at Syracuse New York by New Venture Gear a division of New Process Gear for General Motors.

If you are driving in 4 wheel drive on hard surface then you have drive line torque lock up as there is no centre diff to allow the front and rear wheels to equalise out the torque . 4 wheel drive is for use when on dirt / snow / ice where the differences between the front and back are allowed to slip the tyres . Jack up a rear wheel and allow the torque to dissipate by rotating a wheel . A point from all 4x4 manufacturers is that you NEVER drive in 4 wheel drive unless you are on dirt or ice/snow conditions. You have probably been getting away with it as any bump that lifts a wheel from the road surface will allow the wheel to slip. Even running the tyre on the white painted line on the road or any wet patch on the road will help ease the torque loading

This sounds like the auto locking hubs have gone out. They will sometimes make a ratcheting noise and then seize up. This time of year especially with the colder weather they will lock up when the grease gets old and hardens. The best thing to do is to replace them with a nice set of Warn manual lock-out hubs. There are some special sockets you will need to do this repair so it might be best to take this one to a shop.

How is four wheel drive used on a 1999 durango


Hi Ralph.

I do not own a Durango, but have owned many 4WD vehicles and can offer tips for proper usage.

The "L" and "H" after the 4 and 2 stand for "Low" and "High" ranges. The 2 and 4 stand for the number of wheels that can receive power from the engine and transmission. Most 4WD vehicles only provide power to 1 wheel on each axle (front at rear for a total of just 2 wheels powered) at any given time (but for purposes of discussion, we'll call it 2WD & 4WD, as advertised).

Generally, "2WD" is only offered as a High range and is the same as a "normal" 2WD car or truck. I haven't seen a car or small truck that offers 2L (but I haven't seen a Durango - so I don't know), but generally 2WD traction can be increased easily enough by simply shifting the transmission to a lower gear (From "D" to "2" or "2" to "1", etc.).

4WD is designed to provide additional traction whenever 2WD isn't sufficient. This can be when surfaces are slippery such as sand, mud, snow and ice or, when pulling a heavy load such as a trailer and tires are not gripping the surface well. Shifting from 2WD to 4WD High will provide more traction at the same tire speed. Maximum power from the engine does not come at low RPMs, so in order to get more pulling power from the engine with out increasing speed (or spinning tires), the transmission should shifted into a lower gear. This is especially helpful when pulling a trailer up a wet incline, etc. If 4WD High in 1st gear is still allowing tires to spin or not providing enough pulling power, then shifting the transfer case from 4WD High to 4WD Low will allow the engine speed to increase (providing more power) without increasing the speed of the wheels (reducing the chances of spinning tires).

4WD should never be used while operating on dry pavement. Since tires wear at different rates, and turning left or right slows the inside tire and speeds up the outside tire when compared to the rear tires, a certain amount of slip is required. Wet surfaces provide this necessary amount of slip - as does sand, mud, snow, ice, dirt, gravel, etc. You should take the time to see how each selection of High and Low affects engine speed and vehicle speed and how the surface and any trailer further changes traction. With a little experimentation, you'll see how it works and be able to choose the right range with little thought.

Don't forget to have the transfer case & front differential fluids checked and changed as per the manual. Neglecting this simple service intervals can leave you stranded when you need 4WD and can be very expensive to repair.

Your blazer is equipped with a shift on the fly four wheel drive. That means that at speeds less than fifteen miles per hour you can shift into or out of four wheel drive by simply pushing the four wheel high button. If you wish to shift into four wheel low. Stop, put the transmission into park or neutral, and push the four wheel low button. Same procedure for shifting back out. Never shift into or out of four wheel low while moving. And be careful in four wheel low. At full throttle your still barely moving, you don't want to blow your engine up!

Can,t get truck out of 4x4 low range


try putting your truck in neutral and then shifting into 2 wheel drive shift on the fly does not apply to 4 low only 4 high and on electric shift models it wont shift unless your ****** is in neutral.
