Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport gen light left side of main dash comes on and stays on until car is shut off. Battery charges fine and the gauge (also in the dash) shows close to 14 v as confirmed with an external volt meter. I am not sure if I have a "problem"or no but my kid uses the Jeep and I would hate to have her get stuck. Any suggestions?.

Voltage should be more than 14--closer to 14.5. Alternator is starting to pack up. Recommend you replace--good insurance. Let me know if you need instructions.

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee has problems starting. sometimes it sounds as if it is going to start but it shuts down. other times you can keep cranking but it doesn't start. the fuel pump works fine. what...

this could be the crank position or cam position sensors. Also antitheft device if installed

If check engine light is on do a self test.

turn key off-on, off-on, off-on. the check engine light will blink out codes in pairs of numbers; 5-5 being the end of the test. Or the codes will display on a digital odometer. Do not start the car when doing the test- just turn key until the dash lights come on then one click back for "off".

Google your findings, if any, for possible solutions.

99 jeep cherokee sport 4.0l 6cyl voltage will go to 19v

The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.

The check gauges light will come on anytime the key is in the ON position and the engine is NOT running, so it's NOT a problem related to the gauges when the car shuts down.  This can be verified if the light goes off when the car is running. Filters and pressures will not normally cause problems like you are describing anyways. It sounds like an ignition problem related to the ECM (computer), as I've had similar problems in the past with the same vehicle, this will probably not be something you can fix yourself.
