Question about 1997 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

My 1997 Ford taurus transmission wont shift. I was driving and it stalled now it wont shift. If i put it in neutral i can push it and if i put it in park it wont move. If i put it in drive or reverse it wont go. The car turns on just fine. But if i put it in drive or reverse all it dose is rev up. I checked the shift cable and its good its shifts on the transmission but the car wont move.

SOURCE: 89 z24 stalls instantly when shifting out of park

Your lockup torque converter is bad I believe. When you shift from Park into any gear it will die.

If the check engine light is on you should get the codes checked for free at someplace like autozone etc. This could be the torque conver clutch solenoid or the speedometer sensor that causes this.

Car runs in neutral, when i put it in drive, the car runs 1.5 or 2 blocks and shuts down. i wait 2 minutes and it start right up and does the same again

Hopefully, a transmission shop is only a few shut downs away. You need it checked for a mechanical problem or an electrical problem. An electrical fix is a lot cheaper than a rebuilt transmission, hundreds less., in fact.

We have a 1995 Ford Taurus sedan and sometimes in order to start it we have to put it in neutral. There seems to be some give in the gear shift when you put it in drive if you're not careful you can...

This can be a dangerous issue. If the gear shift is that sensitive a simple bump could cause the transmission to shift out or into a gear. At higher speeds this could be very dangerous. I suggest you take the car into a transmission shop to have them diagnose the problem. It may be as simple as a linkage adjustment. Err on the side of safety.

Loss of power steering, radio, and window controls only when in drive if i put it in park and neutral all of the above returns

You will need to replace the shift lever position switch mounted on the transmission under the shift lever. Not too hard to do, but it does have to be aligned right to work right. Look closely at it and there is a line that marks the proper position when the lever is in neutral.

with the brake on,try to start it in reverse, neutral, and drive.if it starts in either position then the switch on the transmission needs to be adjusted, where the cable shifts it to either gear, also check the wires to the starter

Where is the neutral safety switch location/located

On top of the transmission, right under the shift linkage. Look down under the brake master cylinder.
