So the crank handle just came off? There is a clip. you didn't look hard enough. You have to put the clip tool behind the handle and push down to get the clip out. To see it you have to pry back on the door panel and use a flash light.
Are you using a key with a "Chip"? or a copied one?
You can get the engine to "ON" position with a crafted key that'll open the doors, but without the proper coded key the Ignition won't go off.
You will want to find out if you are not getting spark or not getting fuel. If no fuel, then bad fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, or bad fuel pressure regulator, or bad fuel pump relay.
If no spark, then bad crank sensor, or ignition module, or coil packs.
are you using the original key for the car because it sounds like a theft system problem I had a 2000 jeep that did the same thing it would start for a bit and then quit on me found out that the key has a chip in it so the key i got cut works for the lockes but cant use to run the car
