Question about 2005 Kia Sedona

2 Answers

Three days ago my Sedona began having stiff steering problems.I dont know if any other symptoms were present before, but I only noticed three days ago. It feels I am driving a heavy truck, but I believe it hasn't gone completely out. I checked the power steering fluid and it was barely below MAX so that was not the problem. No squealing or any other clues.

The oil pump for the power steering is dying - and what you are experiencing is what you would expect in this case. Squealing can be heard when the belt is loose or the steering rack has an internal leak - not your case.
There is only one thing you can do: replace it.

Have a look at the drive belt for the steering pump....It may have broken and that will give the problem you're having....

  • It should be with the other pulleys and belts.
  • Look for a pulley close to the others without a belt, and that'll be the one...!
  • If it's not broken make sure of the tension

First I'd check your power steering fluid. However it's common for the rack and pinion to go bad as the vehicle ages, other than that it could also be you're power steering pump. You will have to have a mechanic take a look at it to be sure.

Some modern cars have an electrically driven pump to supply high pressure oil to operate the power steering. However, most cars have an oil pump for the steering which is turned by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. If the belt is loose or slipping, heavy steering will be the result, especially noticable at low speeds. Check belt for tightness, and check oil level is not low, possibly due to a leak?

Power steering is stiff some times on my kia sedona

It might be a failing power steering rack as well...classic symptoms are very stiff when first starting vehicle or at a stoplight, then loosens up as rpms increase.
