Question about 1998 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

My 1998 Dodge Dakota V-8, that has 110,000 miles on it, started this afternoon, ran rough and stalled out after about 30 seconds. I tried some starting fluid and it ran until it had used the "ether". Air temp was 60 degrees. Could I have a false fuel guage reading(it shows about a third full) or am I dealing with some type of fuel delivery problem from the tank? I filled the tank 12 weeks ago, and it was last driven 3 days ago. Thanks Ron Banzi

I didn't try testing the fuel line rail in the engine compartment, but I tried a very easy test.....Thinking that I had experienced starting problems with small 2-cycle and even 4-cycle engines some 2 years ago, I began adding STAYBIL to my small engine storage cans whether it be oil mix or straight. Now I have been doing this for about 2 years with no further problems.......So back to the no-run problem with my Dodge. This morning it still wouldn't start so I added about 3 gallons of "treated" fuel that was about a month old and surprise, my Dodge truck ran with the first crank. In my opinion, the problem that the "govt mandated" ethanol additive creates is not only confined to small engines, but it appears that it had a causative effect on my vehicle as well. I hope this might help someone else.

Simple test: disconnect the fuel line that goes to the injector ramp and put it in a 2.5l bottle then put the contact - just the contact, don't crank it. If the fuel pump is good the bottle should be filled in less than 5 minutes.
If the fuel pump is good then the next thing you must do is to have the error codes read - they will tell you if this is sensor related(the temperature one is the most likely).

The gasoline-ethanol mix is indeed harder to light when the engine is colder - it vaporizes less - but that shouldn't be problem to the newer engines. If this is the cause then a simple update of the mapping of the ECM will fix that.

Engine runing rough

This code is most likely not related to the problem, it sounds like you may have picked up some contaminated gasoline, maybe has water in it or other like dirt.
