Hi

I dont think you need new battery cables, no way! It sounds like the seleniod has gone or is going in the starter motor. The battery cables may just need checking over to ensure they have a nice tight contact with the battery and also there should be a second earth / ground wire to the gearbox and one to the car body, have a look around them for corrossion and ensure they are tight and clean.

Hope that helps but I cannot see how you would need new cables, watch you dont get ripped off because that does not sound right.

Hope that helps
Regards
Dan

When you say you're having a hard time starting it does that mean it cranks over fine but it just takes a while to start or does that mean the starter is dragging when you try to start it

Just came from the mechanic. He checked (his) new alternator --AOK. Checked the battery (car running and car off), said it had no power. Well, it's a brand new PepBoy battery, about 3 wks old. So he...

brand new batteries have a warranty because they fail early on in life. Brand new should equal quality but sadly it does not. It is good to see that the mechanic is interested enough to follow up on his work so hang in there as he may get to the root of the problem

you need to remove the battery cables and clean them fully,, tighten them once cleaned,, your alternator can't recharge the battery if the posts and connections are dirty , once you have them back on and tightened, put petroleum jelly on the posts and connections, this slows the corrosion process

1996 Chevy Lumina Sedan Whining noise from engine

The pattern you describe is consistent with an alternator going bad. Maybe the fields are already rubbing together. Test it this way: Start the car and leave on idle, when the whine is worse, then start using up electricity, by increasing the demand. Turn on AC, then lights, then full blower and then high beams. If there is a change in the whine, then either alternator or voltage regulator is the culprit. When a compressor pulley bearing is bad, noise shifts just by turning AC on and off.

Did it start doing this after installing the new battery?
Does it crank slow? If that's the symptom, I don't see how it could be many of the other things you listed. For example: a clogged fuel filter won't cause the starter to turn the motor slowly. Fuel filters rarely are the issue anyway.
If it's cranking fine but not starting when it's hot, start by checking electrical connections, primarily at sensors. Look for loose or corroded connections. Also, make sure the cables are clean and tight at the battery. I've seen some corrosion cause issues. Also check relays and fuses to be seated good and clean. Maybe wiggle them a little to make sure they are seated properly.
Unfortunately, electrical issues can be a pain to sort out.

Trouble starting & dies soon after starting

What about the fuel filter in the frame? Did the Ford mechanic check it?
Is a diesel? If that is the case, it could be the electric cellanoid switch in the injector pump. But usually it would start and stop it would just shut down with that.
