A battery voltage reading with little to no load on the battery is not a good test of the battery. The battery should be load tested, a place like AutoZone can do this for you. If the battery is more than 5 -6 years old, it is time to replace it. Also when having the battery tested, have the alternator checked as well.

Engine won't start. Cranks very slowly like it's on compression.

What are you working on? Make, model, etc. Check the wires for corrosion as they can cause symptoms of a weak starter. Also, was the engine acting irregular prior to the starter problem. Bad bearings can cause this too. Wouldn't hurt to bench test the starter. Just because its new doesn't mean it good. thanks

What can I do to fix the battery from draining? Or is it something else?

Hello Dorothy, I doubt that it is your battery. The battery is drained down overnight because of a current draw. I would check to make sure the glove box light is not on. With the engine OFF, You can disconnect the positive battery cable and install a volt meter between the positive battery cable and the positive battery terminal. A draw on the electrical system will show on the volt meter as 12 volts. Disconnect fuses in the fuse box until the draw is no longer 12 volts. That might help you determine where the draw is coming from. A draw could also be caused by a problem in the alternator. You might need to isolate the alternator to find the draw.

310C backhoe, slow cranking, got 3 batteries hooked up

Have you tried pushing the lever like you are lowering the bucket while starting it? Sometimes the pumps on these can drag the engine back while starting, especially if cold. It's best to shut them down with the bucket in the air some. Let me know how it goes.

My 2001 5.3 litre shows voltage light on start up and gage shows low voltage it will begin to charge agian after a few minutes of idle i had the battery checked and it showed ggood next thing woould be...

Check the idle rpm (efi around 900 rpm ) carby around 750-800rpm. Very few alternators charge under 750 rpm as it requires 14 volts to charge the battery and at low revs the alternator will be producing around 11.5-12 volts. Check tension and condition of drive belt.

Battery tests at 12 volts but won't start but starts with jumper cables to other car

battery should be showing 12,45 - 12.6 volts when car is standing still. also batteries getting old colects sulphate on plates ,this degrades the cold start performance. you can see that cranking amperage on stickers of batteries. for example 90 amperes 750 cca battery is required for my car but les wont crack it even it is 90 amperes but 640 cca. mainly lead acid or dry type batteries needs to be charged more than %40 of its capacity. 12 volts is only the ~%25 of its capacity and it seems yours is dead already.

REPLACED STARTER THEN RECHARGED BATTERY CAR STARTED FINE THEN DROVE FINE THEN GAGES ON DASH STARTED GOING CRAZY ALONG WITH RADIO THEN CAR ACTING LIKE IT WANTS TO DIE NOW WONT START

sounds like your battery is dying,, have it LOAD tested,, it could show 12 volts, but the amperage isn't up to par,, even with one bad cell the battery will drain , also,, once you know its fully charged, start the vehicle,, use a meter at the battery posts to check the voltage,, you should get a reading of 13.5-14.5 volts, if not your alternator isn't doing its job, make sure all battery connections are clean and tight.

The battery won't hold charge new battery

You put a new battery, now its acting like very low power again?
Most likely the alternator is bad. Maybe not putting out enough to recharge battery. Could have been the original problem.

Can be checked with a meter. Battery at rest should show 12 - 12.9 volts more or less.
With engine running, should be showing 13.5 - 14.7 volts as alternator is pushing electric back into battery.

If you start engine and (after say 10 seconds) voltage stays same or drops, then the charger needs to be replaced. Thats the alternator. Shop around at different auto parts store. (Phone first)

Engine won't start and if starter is replaced does it have any other problems

Engine wont start. If car battery voltage is low then engine wont start. The fully charged battery will show 12 volt. But if battery is showing 12 volt. Then check the battery to starter connection. If that is also checked ok then check voltage for starter itself. The starter is also a 12 volt part. But if the starter is faulty then it has to be replaced. If you start the car but if its not starting then its starter fault. But if the car makes cranking noise but its not getting turn over then there are many other possibilities. But if the car is not even cranking then its faulty starter.Get this checked and confirmed before replacing any part. This should help.Thanks. Cadillac escalade ext will not start dic message says service battery charging system i'm reading 12 volts on battery but it act like a dead battery not charging system

A battery can read 12 volts yet be weak in cold cranking amps, try a jumpstart and if that works have your battery load tested. Im betting your gonna find the battery fails the load test, meaning it needs to be replaced..
