Question about Toyota Camry

2 Answers

I noticed dash brake light was on, I checked parking brake to be sure it was off, light didn't go off. Was debating turning around and taking another car when car wouldn't quit accelerating, put in 2nd than low. Pushed on brakes felt like I lost power brakes took both feet. Managed to put in park and turned key off. Tried restart twice still was racing. Pulled up on accelerater didn't feel anything but started up normally. Brake Light was still on and drove mile to house with no more problem. Checked brake fluid it is full. Was this two problems at once is brake light an indication of needing brakes changed? What could cause the acceleration problem I heard those reports of newer toyotas many blamed on floor mat or hitting wrong peddle but neither of these was the case here. I was lightly accelerating when it sped up on its own and would not stop. Why would I not have power to brakes at that time?

Thanks brake fluid is normal and parking brake is off will check for the other problems. But scary part is what caused the car to speed up on its own and engine not stop racing even after being turned on and off until I played with the peddle which did not appear stuck but on restart engine was normal at that point. Believe me engine racing and no power brakes at same time was not fun.

It is a 1995 Toyota Camry and after reading other peoples experience with run away acceleration I know thats what it was. RPMs were through the roof and if I would have been in town I could have wrecked its why both feet on brake did little. I assumed from Toyotas explanation in the news it was mostly peoples imagination and newer vehicles but after experiencing it, its real. I also now know to put in nuetral to keep power steering and brakes and get off road. I down shifted into 2nd and than low with both feet on pedal, slowly ran a stop sign on a steep incline, deciding not to put into park and damage tranny and pulled into a rural post office with circle drive way where I put in park and shut off with engine racing. Tried to restart 2 times with same results. Pulled up and down on gas pedal felt nothing happen, no feeling of sticking etc, restarted and and slowly drove home as if nothing happened. My question is this I found 1,000's of reports with older Toyota's many accidents, many repeat happenings and many who just got rid of them. But no one tells you what you need to have replaced to prevent this from happening again.

I see you have received a response, but I can't see how without knowing the year, model and mileage of the vehicle in question. Can you post answers to the previous questions for me. Thanks.

It is the accelerator pedal design, and Toyota has issue recalls for this very safety issue and they repair it for free. if you fell the issue is related to this and the vehicle was never brought in for repair, I suggest you do it right away. They don't charge the consumer for this safety related repair.

Sometimes float sticks down in brake master; I will then realized that there has to be a reason for the plug on the wiring harness to the brake fluid reservoir. I suggtes unplugged it, plugged it back in and tapped. In other cases, it means one or more of the following, the brake fluid is low, the parking brake lever is either up or the circuit for the paking brake switch is shorted, or if the battery light is also on, the car needs a new alternator.

Keep us updated.

Getting the gear shifter on 09 Jag to turn from park to n to d to any gear, won't turn, stuck in park

It is likely that the brake switch located under the dash above the brake pedal has become defective. Check that the brake lights are lit when the brake pedal is depressed. If not then you can be sure it is most likely the switch has failed to operate prohibiting the solenoid to release the gear switch.

Check owners manual for work around that allows the release of the shift actuator. Usually a plastic tab is removed and a key or suitable probe is inserted to release the actuator from park.

Hope this has helped?

Parking Brake and Anti-Lock Lights Don't turn off

When you release the parking brake (while keeping the handle pulled) reach down or use your foot and pull the parking brake pedal up . If the light goes off, the switch needs adjustment

Can't move the shifter out of Park after starting engine on my 2000 Taurus. To drive the car, I have to stop the engine, turn the key slightly back, move shifter to Neutral and restart the engine. How...

This might sound strange, but check your stopping lights and make sure they're working. If I'm not mistaken, this model had a stop light "feature" that prevented the car from moving from the park position if required lights were blown out.

The other problem could be your pawl in the transmission. Sometimes, if you don't use your parking brake, a groove can shave into it. This is usually if you are often parking on an incline, in which you should use your parking brake to avoid pawl grinding.

I'm sure you checked for nobs or release buttons, but I figured I would mention it just in case. I know my car has one, but if you drive this car often...I'm sure you knew it was there to begin with.

Good luck!

1993 blazer parking brake light won't shut off

Are you sure the brake light (on the dash) is on because of the parking brake ?
Try this. Watch the brake light and at the same time set your parking brake. If the light seems to get slightly brighter then it isn't on due to the parking brake it is on for another reason.
If it does not get brighter then you need to look at the parking brake switch down by the parking brake as it may be grounded out causing the light to be on.
Be sure to check the brake fluid level. If it is low on brake fluid it will turn the light on also.

My (brake) light turns on in the dash and wont go off what can it be?...

This light can be caused by your parking being on. If not, it's most likely caused by low brake fluid. Check the fluid level under the hood and fill it up if needed. If that doesn't get rid of the light, you should have it towed to a dealer and don't drive as your brakes may fail at any moment without notice
