Check for a small crack on the 90 degree plastic fitting on the top of the fuel pump. If not that, check the o-ring in your quick connect fittings on the top of the fuel pump as well.

However, y9ur gas smell could be a cracked fuel filter, or cracked full line, or loose injector port. Get it looked at if you do not know how to check these things. The heat of your engine mixed with a fuel leak is a bad combination

GAS ODOR IN A 2005 PONTIAC SUNFIRE

could be corroded gas lines or gas tank, the carbon cannister or leaking injectors and or if you have a tendancy to fill your tank more at the gas pump to the rim of the filler cap the filler neck that connects to the gas tank by means of a rubber seal may be ruptured. check for gas leaks under the car and in the engine bay, first with the car running and then with the car,s engine shut down and around the filler neck.it could be as simple as having to replace your gas cap. good luck.

I have a 2005 chevy malibu maxx v6. car runs great, no hesitation or stalling, however a intensly strong odor of gasoline suddenly began about 3 wks ago, and is gettin stronger by the day! it Can be...

No service engine light? A loose gas cap will set a light.
You may want to inspect your fuel filler neck and anything close. For a long while its not uncommon for a person to report the fuel odor issue and have it be where some low life cut a filler neck or puntured a tank to steal fuel. But if that were the case there would usually be a service engine or gas cap light as the systems now days monitor pressures so they can detect leaks in the Evap system.

When you mention a smell though under the hood, do you think the smell could be exhaust? I have seen those manifolds crack. or maybe just a leak from a gasket or exhaust donut.

My G6 is currently in the shop getting the fuel tank replaced. I to had a strong fuel odor coming from my car, is this a known problem that occurs with the G6's?

No, this is not common. Pontiac has not released any recall notices, or Technical service bulletins about this complaint.

Smell of fuel and minor trace of gas on bottom of tank

Something is leaking, and you have fire risk.

I would normally pull the fuel tank, and if inspection showed nothing obvious, I would take the tank to a radiator shop and have them pressure test it...

Be very aware that any sparks will ignite the vapors, no need to burn, you know.....

Do not ignore this issue.

Fuel smell near the fuel tank

You may have an overloaded carbon cannister, the carbon cannister stores fuel vapors and is part of the evaporative emission control system, I will be willing to bet if you change it the smell will stop.

Strong odor of gasoline vapors

do u have a check engine light on? do u overfill the tank? which is to say when the filler nozzle clicks off do u still try to put more fuel in? in any event u most likely have a overloaded carbon canister, pull the canister out and check it for gasoline saturation, the carbon canister is located under the car in a tray near the fuel tank.
