Question about 2002 Dodge Durango

The knob that controls the fan, for temperature control is not working. The knob turns but no fan comes on. What could it be?

I just had this issue myself. After looking on the web, I found out that it was the blower motor resistor. It's on the passenger side, over where your left foot would be when sitting. This part is a dealer part. I paid $10 plus tax. Glad I looked - my husband was going to buy the blower motor which would've been about $80! Now that works, but, alas, I only have cold air blowing through the vents!! This is easy to fix yourself. Hope it helps!!

My 1998 gmc jimmy slt has a heating problem. The heater wont turn off. As long as the car is on the heater is on full blast. The fans work and everything knob wise works but the heater is always on.


The air temperature valve electronic actuator positions the temperature door according to the temperature setting of the temperature control on the temperature control knob. For the full COLD temperature setting, the temperature control returns approximately 12 volts to the air temperature valve electric actuator. When the temperature setting is changed to full HOT, the temperature door is moved to the warm position and the output drops to about 0 volts. For a temperature setting in the mid range, the temperature door is positioned according to the voltage supplied through the temperature control switch.

Inspect the HVAC I fuse 21.

  1. Disconnect the air temperature valve sensor.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Move the headlamp switch to the PARK position.
  4. Using the J 35616-A , connect a J 39200 Digital Multimeter (DMM) between cavity 8 (CKT 733) of the air temperature valve motor connector and ground.
  5. Move the temperature control knob from the HOT position to the COLD position.
Does the voltage vary smoothly and continuously within the specified range?
0-12 V
Go to Step 4
Go to Step 9

Using the J 35616-A , connect a J 39200 DMM between cavity 10 (CKT 341) of the air temperature valve motor connector and ground.
Does the voltage equal the specified value?

Where is the air and heat blend motor on a 2000 dodge dakota?


Hi Sharon, I'm glad to help. Your 2000 year doesn't have a motor for the temp door. It operated by a cable running from the control head to the temp door and you work it manually. If you can't control the temperature from hot to cold, sometimes the cable come off or breaks. Here how you can see the cable to see if its working. Remove the radio and right behind it you will see the cable attached to the door, while watching it move the temp lever from hot to cold and watch it. If it is moving then its most likely out of ajustment. If it is not moving, then you'll need a new cable. Just in case it is moving, I'm attaching the instruction on how to adjust it below. TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE

Any time the heater-A/C control or the temperature control cable are removed and/or replaced, the following procedure must be performed.
  1. The temperature control cable housing and core must be installed at both the heater-A/C control and the heater-A/C housing ends, and the heater-A/C control must be installed in the instrument panel. See Heater-A/C Control and Temperature Control Cable in the Removal and Installation section of this group for the procedures.
  2. Rotate the temperature control knob on the heater-A/C control so that the knob pointer is in the 12 o'clock position.
  3. Pull the temperature control knob straight out from the heater-A/C control base until the perimeter of the knob (not the knob pointer) protrudes about 6 millimeters (0.25 inch) from the face of the control base.
  4. Rotate the temperature control knob to the 1 o'clock position. Push in on the knob slightly and continue rotating the knob to its full clockwise stop. The knob pointer should be aimed at a position about 8 millimeters (0.315 inch) beyond the end of the graduated red strobe temperature control graphic on the face of the heater-A/C control base. If the knob is not pointed to the correct position, go back to Step 2 and repeat the adjustment procedure.
  5. Rotate the temperature control knob counterclockwise until the knob pointer is in the 12 o'clock position again.
  6. Push the temperature control knob straight in towards the heater-A/C control base until the perimeter of the knob (not the knob pointer) is flush with the face of the heater-A/C control base.
  7. Rotate the knob to its full clockwise stop again. The knob pointer should be aimed at the end of the graduated red strobe temperature control graphic on the face of the heater-A/C control base. If OK, go to Step 8. If not OK, go back to Step 2.
  8. Rotate the knob to its full counterclockwise stop and release the knob. If the knob springs back from the counterclockwise stop, the self-adjuster clip that secures the temperature control cable to the blend-air door lever is improperly installed. See Temperature Control Cable in the Removal and Installation section of this group for the procedures. If the knob does not spring back, the temperature control cable adjustment is complete.

The temperature control does not change when the fan is turned up. if i want to change the temperature from hot to cold, i have to turn down the fan, listen for the switch in the dash and then turn the...


I can tell you about my experience on my 1999 F150. I do not believe it is the blower control switch because mine went out and only affected the fan speed. On my truck, in an incident like yours, I could not get a good response from the temperature switch.

I would turn the control and it would hit a stop on both ends, but the temperature would not change to match the switch. What I found is the stem of the temperature control did not turn because the knob cracked behind the switch. There is a half-moon shaped metal clip inside the plastic temperature knob. The clip can spin when the knob is cracked and nothing moves right.

Because the plastic knob has molded stops under the knob, from the drivers point of view, the knob was turning lock to lock. In reality, the stem was not turning. Try taking the knob off and turning the stem with pliers wrapped in cloth to protect the plastic. Then see if the temperature changes.

Heater Fan does not work


Sounds like the fan control knob has shorted out. You can check the fan "blower" relay and fuse in the engine compartment but you need to make sure the control knob is good or you will keep blowing fuses and relays. If your blower fuse and relay are good, then just have the control knob checked and replaced if needed.

Temperature control knob turns but doesn't change temp.


the heater control valve is visible through the speaker cut-out; it's at the end of the plastic heater control rod, inside the car - not on the other side of the firewall! It's connected to the valve with a plastic "universal joint".

Check that the valve is actually being turned by the rod. The connection might not be good (pulled apart or broken), and or the valve might be stuck.

is it the temperature control knob or the fan speed knob? the temperature control knob is hooked to a cable that operates a valve in the engine compartment. sounds like this is your trouble area...you can open the hood and locate the heater control valve near the firewall...have someone turn the knob to see if the valve lever opens/closes. if it does it is bad. if it does not move there is a problem in the dashboard behind the heater control unit.

The ac won't work right


The first knob controls the temperature. Turning it counterclockwise will lower the temperature, clockwise will raise it. Pressing the button will turn on the circulate function (recirculates the air from the cabin).
The second knob controls the fan speed. Counterclockwise will reduce the fan speed, clockwise will increase it. Pressing the button activates the A/C compressor (allows colder temperatures).
The third knob controls the flow direction. Each picture indicates where the flow will go. Pressing the button activates the rear defoggers (in some models, it will also activate the heated side mirrors).
