Question about 1985 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer

1 Answer

My 1985 chev blazer will not engage the front drive axel. I had the transmission replaced and i now have unconnected vaccume lines around transfer case/transmission area. Is there a valve or something that uses a vaccume line to engage the front drive?

If the light for 4wd does not come on it could be that a vacume line has cracked or become seperated from the ball under your battery listen under hood for a hiss, my hisses usually come from somewhere around the heater box where the lines join together on the way to the ball or the vacume ball may be bad the front wheels will not enguage without vacume applied as vacume pulls the locks in. The xfer case is working if it turns the short driveshaft

I have a 97 blazer 4wd i repalced vaccum switch all vaccum lines and made sure actuator cable was good lights come on like im in 4wd but diff doesnt lock in and actuator not getting vaccum

The vacuum actuator should move by hand without vacuum applied. You should also be able to see it move if you have someone switch the transfer case into 4hi/lo from 2wd and then back again. There is a vacuum switch on top of the transfer case that locks vacuum once the encoder motor engages the transfer case to lock the front axle into position, and then releases the vacuum once the encoder switches back into 2wd mode allowing the front axle to decouple. If you aren't getting vacuum, first check your vacuum lines for leaks, then check for vacuum coming from the transfer case when it's in 2wd mode.

Make sure that the vacuum hose connector is connected AND connected correctly at the transfer case and at the front differential. If that is all right and the front differential still doesn't engage, then you need to test the vacuum actuator at the front differential.

i'm sorry to say you dont have one only the newer models do you should just have a lever like i do and if it switch into 4 high and it still wont engage see if there is a light on for the front axel by the lever it should glow bright orange if not your front drive shaft is not engageing and that a vaccum switch under your battery not electronic at all you can get a manual cable one from lmctrucks.com or you can custom make one your self

2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.

Sounds like the front axle electric actuator is bad. these are mounted on the front differential housing. they are known to go bad.
