You need to check fuel pressure and know that the fuel filter is fairly clean also.
The filter will last for 3 years, but can not be clogged up
If you have correct fuel pressure, then you make sure the pressure regulator works correctly.

The pump would have to be pretty bad,not to allow the vehicle to start.
The only real good test, is to put an oscilloscope on the pump fuse, to look at the electrical patterns, also a current check, could help diagnose a failing pump.

I always wonder why people go to a shop, then come here and question the professional advice they got.
I would guess they never answered any of your questions or can prove what they recommend.
They are just guessing, and you don't believe them, you may be right.

Second, how does the shop know, your starting issues are fuel related, not something else.

The electronics inside the Mercury Villager are slightly primitive, however there should be a third wire connected to the original fuel pump, and it must be taken off and put onto the new fuel pump, this becomes a ground wire.

Have a 1995 Mercury Villager that wont start have replaced the starter battery cables switch what else can it be please help.

try spraying starting fluid in air intake or throttle body. If it starts, it is a fuel problem. Can you hear ful pump run for 5 seconds when you turn key on? Pump is in tank.

Last sumer, when it is really hot out, our 93 Villager would stop runing after seting for about 20 min. it starts and run fine, this kept happening all summer. All winter no problem. Now this summer it is...

I've owned a 96 Villager and a 97 Villager that both exhibited this problem on occaision. As I understand it the fuel pump is weak. When ambient temperature is high the gas line is subject to vapor lock. Usually my car gave a warning acting like it was running out of fuel in repeated fits. I had about 10 minutes to find a good place to pull off the road. That is why a 15-20 minute wait eliminates the problem. You can solve it by replacing the fuel pump with a higher rating. I personally chose not to spend the money and have put up with the few times a year the problem crops up.
