Spark plug gap for 5.7L Engine idling very high,already changed idle air solenoid,any other suggestions?

    also when i take the oil filler plug off there is quite a bit of vacum ther and engine almost stalls

Unplug the mass air flow sensor and see if idle returns to relatively normal. The maf is located in the induction tube between the air filter box and the throttle body. The spark plug gap should be .060 inches.Let me know if unplugging the maf helps bring the idle down. Other things that can cause high idle problems are vacuum leaks. Do you know if there are any diagnostic trouble codes stored usually will turn the check engine light on?

    You may have a intake manifold gasket leaking.Try spraying induction cleaner around the intake manifold and throttle body to see if a rpm change occurs when spraying in that area. If there is a rpm change look for disconnected or broken vacuum lines or a vaccum leak at the intake.

Lots of great suggestions have been made by other contributors. I just have to go with my own experience and have you check that your electric cooling fan is kicking on. I lived in a hot climate, driving in city traffic, and the brushes in that motor wore out after just a couple of years and kept the car from performing properly at idle due to an overheating engine. Most of my mysterious engine problems went away once the engine compartment was cooling properly again.

Check air filter. Check for any vacuum leaks. Check condition of plug wires. Were new plugs pre-gapped? If not, make sure the spark gap is correct for your vehicle.

I would tell you to stop guessing and throwing parts on that you dont need. First have it scanned and see if there are any trouble codes. you need to replace the ALL the spark plugs, Use only Motorcraft or Autolite platinum spark plugs gapped properly. . Be careful as coils are a common weak item , and are about $95 each. the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoids are common to go bad also (controls idle speed)

Check the coil packs and EGR:
Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Operation Application of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) gases is regulated by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). It is based on engine coolant temperature, engine speed, vehicle speed, throttle angle and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP). The operation of the EGR system is monitored by the PCM, which allows gases to flow at a calculated rate and compares it against MAP sensor and oxygen sensor activity. The PCM anticipates an increase in MAP voltage and an increase in O2 sensor voltage.
Electrically operated vacuum control solenoids used to control the flow of vacuum to the EGR valve, rely on pulse-width duty cycle commands from the PCM to control its operation. Using input values and the operating conditions previously mentioned the PCM completes the electrical circuit for the solenoid to allow vacuum operation of the EGR.
In addition to solenoids controlling vacuum flow, the incorporation of a back pressure transducer regulates vacuum signals independently of electrical signals. When back pressure in the exhaust system is low, the transducer pintle is open and manifold vacuum is allowed to bleed off. As back pressure increases the amount of vacuum allowed to bleed off is reduced resulting in more vacuum being applied to the valve. This allows air pressure to open the valve.
The following symptoms can be caused by a faulty EGR valve due to loose connection, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit.

The best way to perform this procedure is to use a spark tester (available at most automotive parts stores). Three types of spark testers are commonly available. The Neon Bulb type is connected to the spark plug wire and flashes with each ignition pulse. The Air Gap type must be adjusted to the individual spark plug gap specified for the engine. The last type of spark plug tester looks like a spark plug with a grounding clip on the side, but there is no side electrode for the spark to jump to. The last two types of testers allows the user to not only detect the presence of spark, but also the intensity (orange/yellow is weak, blue is strong).
  1. Disconnect a spark plug wire at the spark plug end.
  2. Connect the plug wire to the spark tester and ground the tester to an appropriate location on the engine.
  3. Crank the engine and check for spark at the tester.
  4. If spark exists at the tester, the ignition system is functioning properly.
  5. If spark does not exist at the spark plug wire, perform diagnosis of the ignition system using individual component diagnosis procedures.

2002 accent stalls and has a rough idle


During rough idling, when the clutch is released due to high rpm of the engine, the engine may stalls. Another possible reason due to quick release of clutch pedals.

First tune the idling of the engine. Look for the cleaness of the air filter, Fuel lines are clear for free flow. Check the spark plugs for free from carbons and gaps are maintained correctly.

When slowing down the car change to appropriate gears and netural the gears when about to stop.

See if adding oil solves it.

If the idle is not smooth then it could be the Idle Control Solenoid Valve. It must need cleaning.

If it is an old car with carbs, you may want to check the idle. Might be low. You can adjust it on the carb. Or it could be on the air fuel mixture.

It may also be the spark plugs. Check the high tension wires that goes to the spark plug from the distributor if they are loose. You can check if they are working fine if you try to pull out the hi tensions wire plug (the end that attaches to the spark plug on the engine itself) one at a time while the engine is running. If you pull out a plug while here will be no changes in the way the engine is running vs the other plugs, you may have a faulty cable there or a faulty spark plug.

High idle speed on 1987 ford F150


it may be this or the ( pcv valve ) pcv get clogged alot on old fords.The idle air control valve (IAC) control the engine idle speed and dashpot functions. The valve is located on the throttlebody . This valve allows air to bypass the throttle plate. The amount of air is determined by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and controlled by a duty cycle signal.

TESTING
  1. Make sure the ignition key is OFF.
  2. Disconnect the air control valve.
  3. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the terminals of the valve solenoid.
Due to the diode in the solenoid, place the ohmmeter positive lead on the VPWR pin and the negative lead on the ISC pin.
  1. If the resistance is not 7-13 ohms replace the air control valve.

Just off the top of my head, guesses: Given what you've already done and the high mileage, could be carb, but I'd start with fuel filter and a good additive like Sea Foam. Also, you might want to replace the PCV and any other sensors which may be suspect.
