The "core" is not really the problem Patrick. (I called it core too ... lol)

I replaced the plugs, wires and distributor cap before someone noticed that the car was actually running while I was turning over the key but it would die when I let go.

We narrowed it down to the iginition wiring harness that runs from under the steering column to under the dash - very easy to replace if you know to put your key in the O position when putting on the new wiring.

Hope this helps someone. I tried a new coil first, then bought a distributor before we realized it was not a firing problem at all.
