Question about 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab

1 Answer

Have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. Truck runs fine until it heats up and the termostat kicks in. It will not idle and the rpms go up and down between 300 and 1000 then stalls. When on the highway it runs fine when i'm on the gas but once I take my foot off the pedal it sharts to run very rough until I step on the pedal again and bring the rpms up over 2000. I have changed the oil, plugs, plug wires, and have a new headers back muffler on it with a flowmaster 40. Remember it runs fine when cold.

Likely your throttle position sensor or idle air control valve. Try disconnecting each one when the problem starts if it corrects you have found the culprit.

Have you checked for a broken valve spring. Repaired a dodge engine with the same running issue as you have described and it was a broken intake valve spring.

1997 Dodge Ram 1500 is losing oil pressure, stalling at idle, and sudden stops. Have replaced oil, plugs, and recently had a new muffler from the manafold back installed. Truck will be running fine at some...

clean or replace idle air control valve located on the throttle body, this is the valve that adjusts the ammount of air allowed into the engine to adjust fuel mixture. If you change it clean the throttle plate of all the carbon build up

I have some hesitation when idling and going down the road my rpms will go up and down, also i have a loud bang somtimes when let off the gas. ?????

might be your fuel pump going out, as it will run fine when it is cold. Then when it heats up it will like back fire and loose power going up hills.

check the iac (idle/air valve) it controls the idle speed during the time the engine is started or coming to a stop. iac valve is located behind the throttle body . hope this will help you with your problem!!!!

Rough idle and misfire on ram truck

Change cam sensor & erase codes.( disconnect battery for a minute or so after.) 340 & 1391 refer to cam sensor problem, and all other 300 codes are cylinder misfires that should disappear when cam sensor fixed.

Dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
