Have you checked the 20 amp FP/INJ fuse and pump relay? It should be getting a 12 volt command signal from the ECU. See the circuit below. Check to see if the relay clicks when the key is first turned on. You can verify by probing the relay socket with a test light. To check the relay and ignition switch, follow procedures at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check. If you're not sure about the relay itself, you can always swap it with another relay to see if the pump will kick on. You can also check for voltage at the pump connector with a test light. See diagram of your circuit below and picture of relay location. Please let me know if you have questions.

Ran out of gas then filled up now car wont start. I have a 97 pontiac sunfire

The electric fuel pump located in the gas tank can and do burn out, from running out of gas. If it won't run, the fuel pressure will need to be checked to make certain it is the fuel pump. A fuel filter can get plugged and the motor will quit running, but you are sure that you ran out of gas?

1997 sunfire it is not getting gas and stalling out when i drive less then 6 km.changed gas filter and new lines stil not working.help!

Here are a few things to try,
1. Injector cleaner...put two bottles in a full tank and drive it for about 50 miles on the highway. This will also eliminate possible water contamination
2.check your air filter
3.clean your throttle body intake with intake cleaner
4.Have your mechanic do a "pressure test" on your fuel sustem...this will tell you whether or not you have a fuel pump issue.

1997 pontiac sunfire wont start

there should be a fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail. you can push the valve with a small pin while some one turn the key on.
if you don't have fuel come out then the pump may be bad

My 2004 Pontiac sunfire wont start the battery is fine but its just not getting gas

When you turn the switch to ON do you hear a sound for a couple of seconds ? you should hear a sound which is made by the fuel pump as soon as you turn the key. If you do not hear anything, you may need to replace the fuel pump. If you do hear the sound of the fuel pump, check your fuel filter .

My 1999 pontiac sunfire takes about 5 to 10 sconds to start up unless you push the gas when you turn the key. is it a fuel pump or something different?

I would get a fuel pressure test before committing to the pump. If the test is bad try changing the fuel filter first. If the test is good check your spark.

First listen for the fuel pump. when you turn the ignition to "on" , just before start, you should hear the fuel pump whining. What you need to do is remove the fuel line going into your fuel rail. Get a small container and turn the pump on and off a few times to get some of that bad gas out. Reconnect fuel line and see if that works. If that doesnt work, Next would be to change the fuel filter which is just behind the rear axle. Other than that you could drain all of the fuel by disconnecting the fuel line to the filter and let it all drain. I dont see a lot of water getting into your port just by leaving the cap off. You might have bought bad gas.

How do u change the fuel pump in a 1998 pontiac sunfire 2.4L?

1. Drain as much gas out of the tank as you can.
2. Remove fuel tank.
3. Remove fuel lines attached to tank. Mark them so you get them back on in the right spot.
4. Remove pump and sending unit from tank and replace with new. Replace in tank filter while you are at it.
