I assume that you have disc brakes. These require a piston/s to push against the pads to tighten them onto the discs. 2 reasons they may not be working are the calliper pistons are seized up in the callipers and 2 the brake booster is not providing the power assist to actuate the callipers. If you have vacuum booster I would repair/replace the booster or check for vacuum at the booster hose. If you have electric pump booster then check that the pump is getting power and is working.
your probably going to have to bleed the entire system.1st try & bleed the master cyl. basicly the same as you would bleed the front/rear brakes. pump pedal & hold while someone loosen the brake line on the master cyl. after m/c is bleed move to r/r,l/r,r/f,l/f wheels in that order. if you have abs brakes & you got air in the pump a scan tool may be needed to bleed properly.
u pushed pedal down to far when bleeding, now u have a bad seal at master cylinder.the pushrod overextended. did u deplete brake before changing caliper and pads ? anti lock vehicles have to be depleted of all pressure before beginning work. have u bled all brakes? air could have been pushed to rear.
Replacing brake pads involves pushing the pistons all the way back into the the caliper. This will force fluid up into the master cylinder. Sometimes it also allows some air to get past the piston seal and cause 'soft' pedal. In this case bleeding is required. Anyway the brake fliud should be completely changed by pressure bleeding at this time.
of course you checked the master cyl fluid level, rite?...did you lose any bk fluid at all when you replaced the pads?....there is air in them some where,,,or you could have collapsed a brakeline hose, usualy the pads will stay in if the line is collapsed....you should bleed the brakes (front) at any rate....hope this helps in some manner.
Check the rear brakes are not leaking, or have air in the fluid feed line.
If above OK, it's probably caused by a faulty master cylinder.
(To check :- Slacken off the master cyl feed to the front (then rear) brakes, and observe if any fluid is being delivered - if not it is definitely a master cyl problem).
You may have contaminated brake fluid. The fluid gets too hot, caused the fluid to expand and lock up your brakes. once it cools it will allow you to move. Flush the brake system, start at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder and bleed the system until all the old dirty fluid is out. Just allow it to gravity bleed, don't waste your time doing the pump and release method. It only gives your buddy a sore foot and if you miscue you **** air back into the line.

Do you mean back brake pads or the back brake callipers?
To change pads you need to use a rear brake pads changing tool to screw in the calliper piston or if you are experienced enough you could screw in the calliper with a two mm thick piece of metal sheeting that fits into the grove of the piston.
If you need to replace the whole calliper remove the hand brake cable first and clamp the flexible brake hose remove brake hose, remove the callier with cylinder and then remove the calliper holder. fit new holder pads and locks and the calliper with the piston and the brake hose and the hand brake cable.
