Question about 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit

1984 starting problem

I have a 1984 rabbit GTI and for the past year or so I have replaced the alternator, battery, and starter. For some reson the thing just can't keep a charge. If i jump it I can drive, but once I turn it off that's the end--it wont turn over again without jumping it. I've checked all the connections and everything seems fine. I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?

My 83 rabbit is doing the same... except that it misses on cylinders before it dies due to inadequate power to supply sufficient spark. Does your rabbit "dog out" at all? I have changed the battery, alternator, and traced the wiring. I'm going to clean the alternator wiring contacts now. Also... when i changed out the alternator, a red light turned on in the instument panel and it hasn't turned off since. Same for You?

Sounds like you have a draw on your battery use a test light as something is still getting power with the car off

You need to pull the starter out and check the drive gear. If the drive gear is no good you will have to replace the starter. Make sure the cogs on the fly wheel are okay. If the fly wheel is damaged you will have to replace the fly wheel.

I've had the exact same problem, it is most likely the starter. Just to be sure I'll tell you what mine did (same model and year) started to act like the battery was going bad, then sometimes would start just fine. But progressively got worse, turning over slower than before until finally it would just click. After pulling the starter I found that the bushing on the armature was missing, this was a 9 month old starter. Replaced with another new and it works just fine.

Just found a problem with my 87 that wouldn't start. The third fuse from the left end had a crack in it. It wasn't blown , it was just cracked. I am not sure yet what it goes to.

1984 volkswagon gti when driving when I turn right the car stalls and quits what makes this happen ? Ihave replaced fuel pump and given it a tune up.

Parts of the car are shifting and causing a loose connection to fail. Get it to fail, stop, and then check for poser at the fuel pump, at the ignition coil (fuel or spark).
