How can the rear suspension be adjusted?

I have a 2004 Santa Fe I use for delivering mail. Apparently it doesn't like a lot of weight. Rear tires wear out on the inside edge. Lots of tread left everywhere but frayed steel on the inside edge. Looking from the rear the tires now have a noticable "lean" to them (tires are angled, tops leaning in toward center of vehicle) even when carrying no load. Can they be straightened out, or even leaned the opposite way a little?

TOE-IN : 0±2 mm (0±0.08 in.)

ABNORMAL REAR TYRE WEAR Ford Focus 2000-2004

"Ford Motor Company told dealers that they may need to replace the rear upper control arms on Ford Focus models. The models include: 2000 through 2004 Focus Sedan, Wagon, ZX3 and ZX5 series.

According to Ford, consumers have been experiencing more than normal wear to the inside of the rear tire(s). Should owners experience such a condition, then they should bring their vehicle in to a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealership for a possible adjustment. Ford will check the rear camber and, if possible, make an adjustment. If an adjustment to the vehicle's rear camber is necessary beyond the negative end of specification, then the dealership will need to source replacement rear upper control arm(s)."

The Ford Motor Company parts service kit required for this replacement is 3S4Z-1A154-AA. Ford will perform the replacement of parts under provisions of the bumper to bumper warranty under Technical Service Bulletin T31305.

This is considered a "silent recall" where upon Ford may NOT notify owners of this condition. " ( From 2003........)

This no doubt is the likely problem with your car or it could just be in need of a wheel alignment. In any event the previous owner(s) may never had put the car in for the rear suspension modification.
If the fix was undertaken, Ford will have a record of it under your Vehicle Identification Number(VIN).

As the car is out of warranty and given the age(2002 model) I expect you will have to pay for the fix if the problem is the suspension components and not simply the car being in need of a wheel alignment which routinely needs to be done every 12000 miles or so in any event.

More likely a wheel bearing or drive shaft issue

How do you change the rear shocks


Support the rear suspensionfrom under the lower suspension arm.
Remove shock absorber upper nut, washer and bushing
Remove lower shock absorber nut and washer.
Remove shock absorber.
Reverse steps to install.

Yes there is adjustment. You need to get the alignment checked out. It could be worn bushes and/or damage to the suspension linkages and struts.

Negative rear right camber


If you bought this vehicle second hand then you need to get your vehicle checked for crash damage. Your insurer can do a check on a vehicle register for a small cost, but that is only if the vehicle was damaged AND repaired/written off via an insurer. this does not guarantee that the vehicle has never been in an accident, you need to look underneath to see if there are any kinks, tears or ripples that don't look quite right. But I would advise taking to a professional repair shop for a good look over.
If the bolt has been replaced, and the readings are correct, then you should be safe enough, just drive steady. But if you are suspect of this vehicle get it checked .

Poor grip in wet conditions


Fishtailing comes from two things...First, all tires are not equal when on wet roads. There is a distinct difference between brands tires and even different tread patterns within the same manufacturer. To find the best tires for your vehicle, you need to experiment with different brands etc. (also look to see what other people are using and how well their vehicles handle.) Worn tires regardless of make will tend to loose traction as well.
Second, vehicle weight distribution (pertaining to weight actually pressing down on each individual wheel). Adding weight to the vehicle by loading up the back with heavy items sometimes helps but will destroy your rear suspension. I use a "non-traditional" fix for this by adding two 20lb flat lead weights to the rear axle (using two longer "u" bolts, one on each side, to fasten them under the spring, behind the brake assembly) With additional 20lbs at each rear wheel, the weight is not on the suspension but adds 40lbs to the rear axle weight, low, where it enhances traction and changes roll center in a good way You may also benefit by adding heaver sway bars to prevent "wheel lift" during cornering (both front & rear must be matched).
I don't know how aggressively you drive, but if you take it a bit easier on turns this will help as well. Driving in 4wd will obviously wear the 4x4 components faster than not using them, but using anything will eventually wear it out! (your vehicle would last a lot longer if you kept it in the garage and didn't drive it.) Use it when you need it...that's why you bought it! It dosen't rain every day!

Front wheel alignment


thanks for your reply/update the reason for front tyres wearing as you describe would suggest the steering tracking is wrong and for some reason ?the tyre wear on inner isindication the track is toeing out too much ? this fault could be ? simple adjustment req'd however dependand on make of tyres has to be considered when tracking as to whether they toe in or out or straight ahead ? also front wheel drive ? there could be other factors b4 tracking is adjusted such as steering joints wear ? or damage ? also suspension ? as i mentioned best to visit a good tyre depot and let them investigate while you wait and give you a reportas to fault normally free in uk if it is simply tracking req's re adjust then they can do it and charge for the adjusting not expensive and they may also recommend switching wheels from rear to front providing tread are good ? hope this helps best wishes

Parking brake


I just replaced rotors on my 2003 Santa Fe, There are 2 phillips screws in the rotor that must be removed. There is an auto adjuster on bottom of brakes. That inspection hole is very small! Sometimes you must tap a hammer around the drum to loosen the rust. Hope this helps.
