Question about 2000 Ford Ranger SuperCab

3 Answers

Have a 2000 ford ranger manual transmission truck used, after driving it 5 miles, going from 2 nd 3rd gears, it makes a grinding sound, even if you just ease into it, like a skip, then a grind. The engine check light came on after 30m to 60 miles after i drove it off the used lot, I took it back, they had their mechanic fix the chck engine light, 2 days later the light came back on, im wondering if the transmission needs to be serviced, I took it to "Ford" they did a quick analysis on it, something about cylenders they fixed, but it would cost 1000 to take apart the engine, not even talking about the transmission...im confused on what to do first.

All gears will make noise especially when they are synchronized as your transmission is. Hhow is the tranny fluid? When was it last changed? Has it ever been changed? What kind of fluid in the tranny?

Hope you dont go to drain it and find metal shavings to say the least.. if I'm not mistake they also had a problem with the plugs on the top of the tranny getting hard and letting the fluid out, causing low tranny fluid.

Keep us updated.

Sounds like the Used car lot just Unhooked the battery and re hooked it up to clear the codes temporary. the Grinding noise could be your Synchro's in your transmission or a clutch problem ..
I hate to tell you this if you can return it and get your money back do it sounds like you got a lemon . some states have laws just for this issue to protect you. look into it
good luck

First: contact a lawyer and see if they can talk to the used car lot who sold it to you. If a lwayer is out of the question, let me know.

The grinding issues lies in the transmission itself. The noise you are hearing is due to a worn synchro. A brass gear/band that allows for the gears to align and glide into position. They also aide in the gear staying in place. To repair, the transmission must be taken apart and the synchro replaced. I don't suppose you are in So. Cal.? You don't have to give specifics, just yes or no. If yes I can give you a contact number.

2004 Ford Ranger 3.0 Manual transmission change the fluid in the transmission with Mobile one synthetic ATF. And after driving it it's making a grinding noise

Hi Steve:
It might be a good idea to check the specified lubricant for the transmission.
In my experience, only automatic transmissions use ATF.
Manual transmissions usually use gear oil.
Personally, I would not drive it any more until I knew I had the correct fluid in it.

Ford festiva transmission

You have a manual transmission. The synchronizers are bad. Probably a couple of bad bearings also. Get a manual and buy the parts. Save yourself atleast a $1000 labor from a garage.

Slight grinding noise in 3rd gear pops out now wont engage ANY gear clutch feels normal shifter feels normal , 190,000 miles was about to need cluch still the original

your teansmission is going to be overhauled. it sounds like the synchros are going bad. the shifter has forks that move the gears. sometimes the forks wear out and it can cause the gears to wear out because the gears are not going into like they are suppose to. leave comment..

1983 Ford Ranger Gear grinding

Your clue is probably that when you pump the clutch twice that it works. I don't know about the 83's but the 96 or so on up have automatic clutch adjustment & when the clutch is worn out that part will not adjust anymore and will create the problem, just like th 97 that i have & haven't changed the clutch yet... (too lazy - waiting for it to totally quit before i fix it) So my guess is that if you haven't changed the clutch, pressure plate t/a bearing stuff, you may need to do that. Ford guys should have told you that.... hope this helps, rick
