Question about 1997 Nissan Maxima
It sounds to me like your starter may have a flat spot(dead spot) and it is gradually burning out.The diming of the lights indicates the kind of "short to ground" associated with this problem.If you are handy I would remove the starter and take it in to an auto supply store and see if they can test it for you.If not I'm afraid you will have to take it into the local garage.Good luck to you.
