It could be a collapsed lifter, a bent pushrod or a bad rocker arm. It could also be a bad piston wrist pin or rod bearing, and the noise sounds like it's up top.

SOURCE: knocking under valve cover on cold starts

is it a knock or a tick because it is very common with most vehicles at cold starts to tick a little until the engine warms up because the oil has to circulate into the top end of the engine and oil tends to be much thicker when cold which makes it even harder to get it from the oil pan to the rest of the engine. I work at an oil change shop and draining cold oil takes forever. Take maple syrup and put it in the freezer, then take it out and pour some out, then warm it up in the microwave and do the same and you will see how much quicker and easier it flows. same concept.

Loud knocking under hood valve cover

Runs bad I bet. If it's under the valve cover, most likely a bolt has stripped out of a rocker arm, could be a broken spring. You could be lucky if only a bolt/nut backed off causing the noise.

Loud Knocking noise coming the top of the engine

possible but I would suggest a compression test to check for loose valve seat insert. They can come loose and follow the valve up and down and cause loud knocking noises and faulty engine operation.

Clanging noise while running

A rhythmic metal on metal noise in an engine usually follows a classic rule: valves tap and pistons knock. If the noise is rhythmic with the speed of the engine and incrementally increases when the engine speeds up, then it is one of these two issues. All you need to answer in this case is whether your noise is a tap or a knock. On the other hand, if the clanging sounds more like an old diesel engine and increases in volume when the engine accelerates, then the problem is pre-ignition. If the problem is simply pre-ignition, then you will need to check your ignition system, including the knock sensor, crank sensor, and all your spark plugs and coils. This is the simplest thing to do first. Unplug each coil one at a time to verify that the engine loses power for each one. Valve tap can be caused by lifters or a broken valve spring. To diagnose this, you need to remove the valve cover and check the lifters. Are any loose when you try to move them up and down by hand? Engine knock signals that your engine needs to be rebuilt with new piston rods and bearings. It is not a good idea to drive very long with either condition or you could end up causing more damage and get stuck on the side of the road.

I have a 2003 Chevy Impala. I ran my car with no oil and now I'm hearing a loud ticking/knocking noise coming from under my valve cover. I added 2 bottles of oil after finding out that I didnt have any...

might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-0.jpg 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-2.jpg

97 SL2 dohc loud knocking sound coming from engine. sounds like somebody beating inside of valve cover with a hammer. compression checks ok. oil level is good. no obvious problems with cams or lfters that...

you have a ROD knock,,,,the oil level can be good and compression can be good, but the bearing on the rod to crank is shot and now has too much play and is causing excessive play and noise, soon the rod will come out the block and seize the engine,,if its knocking that loud then its too late to fix it,,your gonna have to replace the engine really soon,,,sorry but its normal of the dohc engine to do this usually between 90 to 130k miles they let loose but the single cam dont have this issue

Do a wet/dry compression test and determine if it's the piston rings or the valve seals.

It is generally just a noisy lifter. This happens to about every 3.2 liter isuzu I have ever seen and didn't really hurt the performance.
