Check the oil and if you are burning oil then you are getting what they call Blow bye you will need to have new piston rings installed by a professional mechanic.

There are a few reasons for the engine to smoke. first determine the color of the smoke, white smoke means its burning water...possible bad head gasket or cracked block or cylinder heads. If the smoke is black...means the fuel mixture is to rich, getting to much fuel. If the color is blueish...it is burning oil, meaning the oil rings are worn, and or the valve seals are worn as well. if it smokes when you first start it, and then stops after a few minutes, once the engine is warmed up...probably bad valve seals. if it continues to smoke it is more likely the oil rings. Valve seals being cheaper and easier to repair, where as the oil rings means the motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

two things pop to mind with this truck, first these motors are notorious for having bad intake gaskets take a flashlight and look very carefully around the valley of your intake/block-head seal you'll possibly see either antifreeze leaking or a weird looking whitish or greenish sort of foam you can also use propane around the seal and look for obvious idle changes, I have done tons of these intakes in my shop, the other two things I would suspect if that looks fine are 02 sensors, or maf sensor.

Had a 94 Olds Bravada that did a similar thing and it was EGR valve on the front of the intake. It' s easy to take off and clean with WD 40 and if you have an air compressor blow it out good.

Turns over but wont start

The "smoke" sound like an electrical short. It might be part of your problem. Maybe your ignition switch(one on the lower column)? I would check to see if there is fire at the spark plugs too. If your getting fire to the plugs I would spray some starting fluid in it to see if it tries to run. If it does, you have a fuel problem. Which might be related to your electrical problem.
