Question about 1991 Cadillac DeVille

2 Answers

1991 deville. replace both rear air struts with gabreil strut. passenger side is fine. driver side seems to be solid. will not shove down on back of car when pushing quater panel down. when you drive car it bounces all over the place. passenger side normal. driver side solid as a rock. no give. took new strut back to autzone. they replaced. installed new one and the same thing. air shock part seems fine. loosen mounting bolts and repositioned. still solid. like strut will not compress, but 2 in a row??? can put floor jack under control air and it will compress the strut. but with car on ground and try to push rear quarter, it is solid. only thing that moves is the tire up and down. everything looks good. no obstructions.

With this model cadillac the strut goes on the front and rear. The new strut that I installed is the same as the one that was removed. As is stated, the passenger side works fine, the driver side is stiff and will not move. There really is very little to go wrong. It mounts on top to the body and two bolts hold it to the bottom knuckle. It just can't think that two struts are bad, not sure what the problem is.

I am still wanting to use the air suspention but I have disconnected the air as soon as I dicovered the problem. so the air is not the issure. i have looked over the spring and wheel assembly and nothing seem to be wrong. i may switch the struct with each other and see if the problem moves. i really can not believe two struts would be bad, but maybe someone has had that happen. i did have to connect the upper mount to the strut. it connects to the top of the strut with the 3/8" thread sticking out the top. i used a impact gun to tigten. i did the same on both. i do not believe that could cause any damage. If i jack directly under the swing arm it will compress the strut but that is using the full weight of the car. but by pushing on the quarter panel the only thing that compresses is the tire. it is as solid as a rock.

the air system seems to work fine. the only reason that i unhooked it was for troubleshooting. with the air unhooked the one strut on the drives side is solid. the other side works fine. so the air is not the problem.

Yes...i seriously doubt that you got two defective units in a row. Without actually seeing it, I'm going to have to guess that you have a problem with the air supply. If you have the struts attached to the vehicles air pump, perhaps you should consider using a separate line kit that uses an external air supply. The lines do not only serve as a supply but also share pressure between both struts, helping to balance them out.. Only other way to prove that out would be to swap the struts and see if the problem follows them (I doubt it). You did check the suspension free travel with the struts disconnected and make sure nothing is binding, correct? (don't see how it would be but when there is a problem nothing should be ignored)
By the way...if you aren't going to use the vehicles air pump anymore they make excellent emergency tire pumps if you attach a hose and tire valve fitting to them and a long extension wire with clips to attach it to the battery (they draw enough to melt most cigarette lighter plugs)

Over the years I've installed thousands of air ride components and have never seen a problem like yours. If you disconnect the air supply from both units, neither will work properly. Disconnecting them from the car and then checking free travel of the suspension will tell you if the problem is elsewhere in the suspension. It's difficult to imagine what would bind like that but I've also seen enough strange things to never ignore simple checking.
Using the factory air supply if it is faulty will give you the same result every time which is why I recommended installing a separate supply line. It is simple and either works or it doesn't, but the only thing that can ever be wrong with that is a simple leak, unless you tighten a fitting so much it closes off the line. If the units cannot share pressure then one will fill at a different rate and therefore resist down force more than the other. Being hard on one side and still bouncing all over the road tells me that may be happening. Likely if someone with experience were to check it out, they would find the problem in a few minutes. I can't do that only because I'm not there.

Ok you have told me so far that the strut is fine, the suspension is fine and the air system is fine. I can't see it from here but I'm betting something is not fine. Telling me something SEEMS fine does not verify sufficiently to me that you have done all the necessary testing. If you do everything I recommended you will find the problem. If not, sorry, but I'm going to have to cut you loose on this one.

Normally, the front has struts and the rear has shocks. The struts are to help reduce the bouncing around because of the added weight of the engine and are much stronger. You need to make sure that putting struts in the rear is the proper part.Call a Cadillac dealer,or even a shop to find out.I really think that is what's going on.Also, when you call regular shops,I always recommend a AAA approved shop because they have to maintain training and are the most honest because of AAA regulations. They are also cheaper than the dealer. That is for things that you do not do yourself or need help with I mean.Don't say yes or no though yet because I would like to see what happens. When you finalize the solution,it appears that it cuts off our communication link.Good luck,Greg

I kind of figured the strut wouldn't fit if it was set up for a shock and you tried a strut. You really have a doozy there.2 different struts and an impact gun should not be likely,I agree.I don't think backing the nut off little by little would do anything. The spring would become bouncier, not tighter.Perhaps the valve for the air shock? That sounds like it's stuck open or something and just keeping full pressure,or locked up,not releasing the air properly. What do you think? That's where I would go next. That's about your last option.Greg

04 deville, abs, pcs, brake light, will not go off after replacing rear air shocks with hydraulic ones. What can be done?

It is very unwise to replace these struts (front or back) with generic shocks!
For example, if you have the road sensing suspension (RSS) option, the struts are computer controlled, and when the computer detects no connection to the strut or a strut problem, you get errors. If this is the case, some folks have terminated the wiring that was removed from the strut with special resistors to fool the computer - check the Cadillac Owners forum for details.
Also, disconnecting the air pump is not wise - more computer errors.
Cadillacs do NOT like aftermarket equipment that does not meet GM specs - a lot less trouble to bite the bullet and just use OEM parts.

How to replace rear air shock on 1992 buick parkavenue

Pretty sure your car has struts on the rear and the shock function is part of the strut. Replacing struts is more difficult than replacing shocks and they should be replaced in pairs.

Are struts on the front or back of this car?

The struts model (MacPherson Strut),are both in front and back of this car.
2000 - 2006 Hyundai Elantra Shock Absorber and Strut Assembly - Rear, Driver Side, KYB GR-2/EXCEL-G, Twin tube, Strut Assembly. $72
2000 - 2006 Hyundai Elantra Shock Absorber and Strut Assembly - Rear, Passenger Side, KYB GR-2/EXCEL-G, Twin tube, Strut Assembly $68
1996 - 2006 Hyundai Elantra Shock Absorber and Strut Assembly - Front, Driver Side, KYB GR-2/EXCEL-G, Twin tube, Strut Assembly $67
1996 - 2006 Hyundai Elantra Shock Absorber and Strut Assembly - Front, Passenger Side, KYB GR-2/EXCEL-G, Twin tube, Strut Assembly $63
Of course this is only the cartridge, you have to transfer the spring, and the top mount of the existing strut. You need a pair of coil spring compressor to do the job. The basic procedure to replace a strut is:
Remove the top nuts that secure the strut assembly to the frame mount inside the engine compartment. Do not remove the center nut.
Mark the lower strut mounting location on the hub for installation reference. The alignment will be close if the new strut is installed in the same position.
Remove the bolts that hold the strut assembly to the hub.
Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
Mark the top mount for installation reference. Using a side mounted spring compressor, compress the spring and remove the top nut and retaining washer. Pull strut assembly out from the bottom of spring.
Slide the new strut assembly up into the spring and reposition the top mount onto the spring in the same position that it was removed. Install the retaining washer and top nut.
Tighten the top nut to the manufacturer's specifications and carefully remove the spring compressor.
Place the strut assembly back into the vehicle.

The rear suspension it has new struts and is equiped with air self leveling. but my drivers rear tire is leaning in bad

You will need an alignment. The strut is slotted to allow camber adjustment. If the tire is leaning in then the camber is excessively negative.

Excessive bounce of rear end.

Actually, these are struts, and you need two new ones. You do not have an air suspension unless someone added one.

You will need a spring compressor to replace. The replacement struts can be bought for around $200 (ea) fully assembled, you can but the strut only (without springs or mounts) and take it and the old strut to a shop ($15.00 a strut to change spring and mount), or you can have them do the whole thing.
