Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

My brake lights don't work. I've replaced bulbs and checked fuses but the 2 rear lights don't work. Is there a separate fuse for the break lights? If so the car manual doesn't describe it. The 3rd stop lamp on the window does.

I get the 3rd light on the window though; if the switch was bad would I get this light?

  • jacksonj25 Nov 08, 2010

Does this switch have more than one circuit controlled from it? I'm getting the stop lamp light on the window when I push the brake pedal so I haven't looked at the switch as the problem.

Check the brake light switch under the dash. It may just be a loose or broken wire or a broken brake light switch. Usually you will find it located near /wear the brake pedal pivots , mounted to the fire wall.

If the brake light on the mirror is working but the rear lights are not , you probably have a broken or disconnected wire at the switch(for the rear lights) or a break somewhere else in the system. Is the car set up for towing ? Maybe you have a bad brake light control module (in the trunk) or a loose or broken wire there.

2005 Toyota Sienna rear brake lights not working. Rear Center light works fine. I have replaced the bulbs and checked fuses. Continuity is good. all other rear lights work fine. What is the problem?

I am wondering if you have a bad ground wire.
Each tail light/brake light had a separate ground wire, that is supposed to be hooked to the ground somewhere.
If it is bad, those lights will not work.
Your center light probably has a separate ground wire.
If you take an electrical meter, test the bulbs with a meter, then stick the meter's contacts inside the socket and press the brake pedal and see if the meter shows "juice".
Often a car wreck/fender bender can break or compromise the ground wire of which I spoke.
God bless your efforts.

If the break lights in my 1986 c corvette works but the tail lights do not, what could be the cause

Blown fuse ,bad headlight switch,or wiring issue.
the tail lights have there own fuse and are powered through headlight switch. Do the front running lights come on? If none of them work, switch could be bad if front work and rears dont, check bulbs and power to them when lights are on

1 brake light doesn't work... good bulb and fuse

Lights are usually on a dual circuit! Left and right have separate fuses, check all fuses or check the fuse diagram on fuse cover or manual to identify correct fuse!

I don't believe there is a separate fuse for the high-mount brake light. Never was on older cars, that brake light is just spliced into the rear brake lights. Have you checked the bulb?

The problem is the socket. Remove the bulb and bend the tabs in the socket so they make contact with the bulb. If this doesn't work you will have to replace the socket. A wire is broke and they usually break at or in the plug.

No brake lights check fuses no blown fuses but the center brake light work

If the center high mount brake light comes on when brake pedal is depressed, and the rear brakes don`t come on, and the fuses are not blown, then I would replace the rear bulbs.

Did you check or replace the brake light bulbs?
It is more common to have burnt bulbs than a bad brake light switch or blown fuse.
Do you have orange signal lights and red brake lights at the rear?
Then the signal light switch will not affect the brake lights.....but....
If they are all red and you use the same bulbs for brake and signal....the brake light wiring goes through the signal light switch and could be affected there.
First....check for power getting to the brake light switch......and leaving it with a test light.......then go to the rear....pull a light assembly and check for power getting to the bulbs.no power? follow the wiring back to the switch looking for a bad connection.
The fuses and relays under the hood are usually in a black plastic box labeled fuses and or relays.

My break light isn't working.

Is it just one brake light? If so, check the socket where the bulb goes and check for corrosion. If it's both brake lights, my answer is different, so let me know.
