This is a symbol of an engine and is called the check engine light, this light is on to tell you theres a problem, you will need to have the computer scanned to get the codes, the codes will help it pinpointing the problem, there are many auto part stores that will scan it at no charge, for example they scan it and they get a code like po301 cyl 1 misfire, this would mean that cylinder one is misfiring, from there you would check the plug or the wire or coil, but this is an example, it could be as simple as a bad gas cap, start with scanning for the codes, your car computer is always testing all the systems of the car, when it sees a problem it turns on the light and stores a code, the code tells you where the problem is, hope this helps.
