Question about Dodge Ram 2500

1 Answer

My automatic trans. is just starting to slip in 3rd and 4th gear. (I think it is an "A518" 4 speed with O.D.) There are 150k miles on the drive train. I put on 50k easy miles in the last ten years. The trans. oil is clean. D1, D2, and R still work good. Could there be a linkage adjustment or a band adjustment I could do before taking it to a shop? I can do alot of my own work, but don't have too much experience with automatic trans. Thank you.

Hi, there are three sensors in the transmission that control it with the computer. One sensor controls 1st and 2nd gear with the shift. The second sensor controls 3rd and 4th gear and the shift. The third sensor controls OD and TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK.
It now means you are having a problem with the sensor that controls the 3rd and 4th gear which you need to change but you require the service of a automatic transmission expert to replace the sensor because the sensor is located inside the transmission....

Trans revs up and slips between 3rd and 4th gear

Could be many things. Depends on transmission. Band, servo, seals, valve body. Take it back if rebuilt at a garage. Most have 1 year, 12000 mile warranties

My 93 LS400 defaulted to 3rd gear. Does anyone know whats wrong

Now, I'm not saying this is a fact, but my TH700R4 trans did that very thing, wouldn't come out of third. And with no 3rd it won't go to overdrive. I rebuilt the trans and found the overdrive drum was all scarred and caused the limp home thing to happen, third gear was as high as it would go. I suggest you have the trans checked out by a professional trans shop. As for it being a bear to start, that's a faulty temperature sensor. If it's not functioning, the computer doesn't know to put it into cold start mode, which increases the throttle speed and puts more fuel in the engine for starting when cold. Like a automatic choke system in earlier vehicles.

1999 Nissan Maxima Auromatic Transmission 4th gear electronic overdrive intermittantly slips.

could be a solenoid
low oil
worn overdrive friction discs

you can source a used transmission from a wrecker
and drop that in

from the pictures i cant tell if its overdrive is under an external plate at the end of the gearbox
and repaired with an overdrive kit

Best advise is to get a gearbox specialist to have a good look at it. 'Slipping' products are only a very temporary fix. Using them too often can actually do more damage.(Damage means a bigger repair bill).
There are too many gearbox parts involved to 'predict' what the problem is. At that mileage a checkup won't be a bad thing to do.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Mileage 132000. 1 to 2 shift normal. Trans. will not upshift into 3rd. gear, goes to 4th. It will downshif to 3rd. from 4th. When the trans. get hot from stop and go...

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

check the oil level of the transmission
that transmission does have an overdrive relay
that relay may be faulty

get the transmission serviced and if found in bad condition
cheapest fix is
source a good used automatic transmission and have that fitted in

cost of a full rebuild on these transmission is more than the volvo is worth
its a lot of km./miles
sounds like the third /overdrive part of the transmission
is slipping or worn

Transmission slipping. does not appear to be shifting properly. replaced ecm. got tcm from jeep grand cherokee same engine (4.7L). notice significant burning/smoke after driving exhaust manifold. not...

U are going to need to overhaul the transmission here, the smoke is the trans overheating from excessive slippage i suspect.code for wrong gear ratio's mean the input and output shaft speed are out of symc for the gear the trans is in, the 3rd or 4th gear is the usual codes, this sometimes is caused by defective speed sensors but most times the trans is slipping and the TCM detects that and sets a code

Trans drops into 3rd gear won,t shift to 4th

DTC P0734 is "4th gear incorrect ratio" - that's your torque converter 'LOCK UP Clutch" It's worn out (or you're using the wrong Trans Fluid required by Hyundai - SPIII OR Both). The P1624 is simply the Trans Control Unit (computer) communicating to the Engine Control Module (ECM computer) MIL - on request signal to ECM = asking it to turn on "Check Engine" light. MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp. When the torque converter 'lock up" clutch slips or doesn't engage, the trans automatically returns to 3rd gear and stays there (it's called 'fail safe' mode) until you cycle the ignition key, then everything resets until the malfunction occurs again.
You'll need to have an AT (Automatic Transaxel) tester hooked up to verify this. Hyundai has a Service Bulletin specifically for "gear incorrect ratio' codes. If when you changed the trans fluid, was it done at a Hyundai Service Center? If not, someone may have installed the wrong fluid.

2007 yukon gears seems striped or transmisson prob. only 72000 mi

It is an internal trans problem. I build transmissions for a GM dealer. It is going to be the input carrier, forward sprag, and 3rd/4th clutches. I have seen several. Get it to your dealer. That truck has a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. That includes the trans. Good Luck.
