Question about Smart fortwo

1 Answer

My smart is 2002, I'm having weird problems with locking and unlocking my car. Both keys gave new batteries and recoded. Problem is my car will sometimes lock and unlock then sometimes won't lock. Will leave it then sometimes work again, when it won't work have to crawl through boot. Have tried the manual way in the book to lock it and this doesn't work. Do you think it is a computer problem? Or is there anything that I can do? I can't work it out as it's so random like it has gremlins! Thank you any advice would be appreciated.

SOURCE: My car key/remote lock and unlock stopped working.

happened to me once. the fuse for it was blown. $3 fuse replacement. check the fuse box & manual for this component. the fuse removal tool is located inside the engine fusebox area, and the fuse for the lock is inside the driver side box.

SOURCE: Car Alarm

sounds like the drivers side key switch has failed remove the interior door panel and there will be a switch attached to the back of the key lock cylinder or around there it should be two or three wires also check the door jamb wire harness where the door closes for any broken or damaged wires, use a vot meter and see if you get power or ground to the opposite side of the switch when you use the key to lock and unlock the door if nothing changes and there is power or ground! at this switch i would replace it, i don't think there is one but if the car has a passenger side key hole try to unlock the car from that side and see if you get the same problem -jeff

you have to replace door lock completely , there is small plastic gear on electric motor which moves locking mechanism and seems that gear is broken, but it is not available as separate part.

Ignition locked. Key won't turn.

Hi,
Yes when you replaced the batteries in the FOB this will have cleared the system identification for the keys.
So have these reset to your vehicle and then you will have no problems.

How come on a 2002 GMC Denali if you lock your key inside

i would say the theft module saw the door trying to be open without the door lock or fob first, once the door lock button was pushed it shut down, it new doors were trying to be unlocked in a theft manner, once shut down it needs time to reset or needs to see ignition cycle with key and read chip in key, smart system isnt it, good luck.

One key doesnt work, has a new battery. Passenger door never locks.

it's posssible that the key will need a recode - even though it has a new battery. I had the same with an Audi. Took it to a friendly dealer who gave it the code and away I went !
