theres a box behind the glovebox it should be cyclindrical in shape with three skrews in the bottom of it remove these and the heater motor will fall out

since the cressida is obd1 you will need to find the diagnosis plug in the engine bay and short out two terminals and look at the cluster and count the amount of times the check engine light blinks and pay close attention to the pauses. i was able to see what the codes meant because my school has the alldata program..

Draining the Cooling System

  • Park the vehicle on a level surface. If the engine has been running allow it to cool completely.
  • Drain the cooling system. Remove the radiator cap from the radiator. Locate the petcock valve on the lower corner of the radiator. Place a waste oil collection pan underneath the petcock valve and turn it counterclockwise to open. Allow the cooling system to drain completely.
  • Label and remove the heater hoses from the heater core. The heater hoses will connect to the heater core in the engine bay, on the firewall, on the passenger side of the vehicle. Use either the Phillips or the flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps that secure the hoses to the heater core. Then pull the hoses off the heater core.
Removing the Heater Core
  • Remove the heater core cover. Move to inside the passenger compartment. Locate the heater case. It will be bolted to the firewall, below the dash on the passenger side of the vehicle. Use an appropriate sized socket or wrench to remove the five screws that connect the heater core cover to the heater case, and remove the cover.
  • Remove the steel straps that secure the heater core to the heater case. Unscrew the four screws that connect the steel straps to the heater case using a socket or wrench and remove the straps.
  • Remove the heater core by pulling it out of the heater case.
Installing the Heater Core
  • Place the new heater core into position inside the heater case. Be sure to carefully guide the inlet and outlet tubes through the holes in the firewall.
  • Reinstall the heater core retaining straps, by reinstalling the four screws that secure them.
  • Place the heater core cover into position over the heater case and reinstall the five screws that secure it.

Refilling the Cooling System
  • Reconnect the heater hoses to the heater core. Slide the hoses onto the inlet and outlet fittings that extend through the firewall, and tighten the hose clamps.
  • Close the petcock valve on the lower corner of the radiator by turning it clockwise.
  • Refill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
  • Reinstall the radiator cap onto the radiator.
  • Run the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

You start by draining off some of the coolant. Open the radiator drain petcock on the drivers side of the radiator. You only need to drain off a half gallon or a little less. Loosen the two hose clamps leading to the heater core. You may have to twist the hoses slightly to brake them free. Now the fun starts. Remove the glove compartment by removing the eight screws at the bottom. With that out of the way you should be able to see the hearer control box. On top of this box is two cables. Remove them by gently prying off the slip clamps with a screw driver. there is also a holding clamp on both of the cables simply remove the screw on both clamps and the cables will come free. Now you remove the three bolts holding the box to the firewall. The ducts attach to the box in different ways depending on what model of suburban you have. Some snap together but most will have screws. Look closely before forcing the ducts apart! Almost done. there are three bolts under the hood on the passenger side. One is on the top of the a/c box two are below it. Only one is difficult to get to. It is located right below the blower motor housing. The easiest thing to do is to use a long extension and a universal joint with a deep socket. Some people take the inner fender off but I don’t recommend it as 16 bolts hold it in place. With all that done the box should be pulled strait out, just before it hit’s the dash, drop it down and out.

The heater core is a small heat exchanger located inside the truck, similar to the radiator at the front of the truck. Coolant is circulated from the engine through the heater core and back to the engine. The heater fan blows fresh, outside air through the heater core; the air is heated and sent on to the interior of the truck. For Toyota Pick-ups/Land Cruiser/4Runner 1989-1996 check this reference repair guide...



Heater Core - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see Figure 1)

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the heater unit assembly. Have alot of towels handy for the leakage of coolant that may spill into your interior.
  3. Remove the fasteners securing the core to the unit, remove the plates and clamps. Pull upwards to remove the core from the unit.
To install:
  1. Inspect the core fins for any blockage. Using compressed air, clean them.
  2. Install the core into the unit placing the plates and clamps into position. Tighten the core screws.
  3. Install the heater unit into the vehicle.
  4. Fill the cooling system.

Heater Unit - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see Figure 1)

Have alot of towels handy for the leakage of coolant that may spill into your interior.
  1. Discharge the A/C system (if applicable), using an approved recovery/recycling machine.
  2. Remove the cooling unit (if applicable).
  3. Drain the cooling system.
CAUTION When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Disconnect the hoses to the heater core. Tag each one so that it may be correctly reinstalled.
  2. On some models you will need to remove the glove box assembly. On others, the instrument panel and reinforcement.
  3. At the heater case under the dash, disconnect the ductwork from the case.
  4. Disconnect the heater control cables from the heater case. Lift the spring clip holding the control cable to allow the cable to be manipulated. Don't deform or crimp the cables.
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness to the blower fan.
  2. Remove the three or four bolts holding the heater case to the dash. Because the inlet tubes project through the firewall, the unit will not fall straight down. It will need to be pulled into the passenger compartment and then brought downward.
To install:
  1. Lift the case into position and carefully place the inlet and outlet pipes through the firewall. Install the retaining bolts holding the case to the dash.
  2. Connect the wiring harness to the blower fan.
  3. Connect the control cables to their linkages. Each must be adjusted so that the motion of the dashboard lever causes the correct corresponding motion in the air door. Both the control lever and the door must reach maximum travel at the same time if full function is to be achieved.
    1. Set the dashboard control to FRESH. Lift the adjustment clip and adjust the air inlet cable towards the heater unit until the linkage is at its maximum travel on Pick-Up and 4Runner. For Land Cruiser, adjust the cable away from the case. Release the adjustment clip.
    2. Set the dashboard control to VENT (Pick-Up) or DEF (4Runner and Land Cruiser). Lift the adjustment clip and adjust the air flow control cable towards the heater unit until the linkage is at its maximum travel. Release the adjustment clip.
    3. Set the temperature control to COOL. Lift the adjustment clip and adjust the air mix control damper control cable away from the heater case until the linkage is at its maximum travel on . For Land Cruiser, adjust the cable towards the case.
  4. Connect or reinstall the ductwork. Make certain each tube is firmly and completely fitted on its port. A light spray of glass cleaner serves as a good lubricant; don't use too much.
  5. Install the glove box and/or instrument panel assembly.
  6. Connect the heater hoses. Use new clamps.
  7. Install the cooling unit (if equipped).
  8. Refill the coolant, then charge the A/C system (if equipped).

1985 toyota cressida keeps fogging up in -15C


Bummer. Two things come to mind: Are you heating? Is there a sweet smell? Are the carpets wet?

Does the car have Air Condtioning? If so it MUST be allowed to be on during the defrost mode. It will remove water using condensation at the evaporatore core (similar to heater core, but the cold side of AC).

Is there water in the car, even in trunk? any water will overload the ability to evaporate....hense fog.

Does opening a window an inch or two help?

I have chased water leaks and it is an ART. But when you get it, it is tons better...... There are other things to do, based on what the results of this stuff are....get back to me, please.

Extensions, and a swivel is the easiest way. Otherwise, disconnect the motor mount, and pull the engine forward.
