One of two things will give an indication. It will start to leak which should be pretty obvious. Or the bearing will start to make noise. Sometimes to determine if the water pump bearing is making noise it is necessary to remove the serpentine belt and spin the water pump pulley by hand. Sometimes it will be bad enough that you will feel a little or a lot of play if you wiggle the pulley. Sometimes you will also notice the serpentine belt riding slightly out on the water pump pulley which can be another sign the pump is starting to go bad.

My 2004 STI is overheating.

Since you mention DON'T MENTION HEAD GASKETS I won't. It is more than possible that your problem is entirely with your water pump. It happened to me this year. Old pump was leaking from the weep holes, very, very , hard to see. Finally replaced the water pump with a NEW not REMANUFACTURED pump and the NEW pump was defective. Engine continued to overheat. I felt like you feel now. I checked the new pump after removal and I had to do the same job over again. If you remove water pump you will see the tracks from the weep holes. If this is the case for you I hope you have saved your HEAD GASKET. Good Luck Friend.

I have a same problem in my BMW 745LI 2003. it leaks from bottom of engine (front). it's not the water pump or any hoses.

Check the seep hole on the water pump. This is an indicator of a water pump going bad. it will leak intermittently to warn you that it is going bad.

Water pump What is the correct size water pump that I need for my 4.6 engine?

Water pump sit on driver side, back of front valve cover (cylinder head) there will be a little cover under that cover is the water pump belt. There's only one size water pump for this engine, Napa auto parts has this water pump the part number is 58512 and it cost about $40.00, if your going to do it yourself you will need a water pump removal tool I'am sure they also have this tool in stock
