Did you "vent" the system after filling,VW used to fit a tap in the top heater hose to do just that but now you have to undo a clip to vent it.......

You will need to bleed the system of air .It will boil over after refill .Let it do this leave it cool down over night ,top up next morning .You have air in the system you need to purge it .of air air..And In you hand book it will tell you how to go about it. Dont let it get to hot it will warp the cylinder head..

How to keep your car below boiling poimt. ALL CARS!!!


most times in the heat your cars cooling system can over load, to stop overheating, always check your vehicles radiator water never the overflow resevoir.

always make sure your top radiator hose is hot, when running and your thermo fans come on automatically when on average heat temp. (half way).

make sure you cannot hear any noises ( clunking, grinding etc) from the waterpump, and always make sure you dont see water leaking from the vehicle ( except when air con is on).

if you do spring a leak always get it repaired ASAP as delay may further damge your cooling system, eg, head gasket and or head, effects may be warped, bent or cracked cylinder head.

always check your radiator and top up if needed at least ONCE A WEEK to avoid damage. and keep your overflow resevoir kept on the correct level.

cooling system failure can produce a big effect on your engines running capability and also your wallet!!!!!

keep your car cool in the heat!!

and also note, coolant or anti freeze does not keep your car cool, it is a corrosion inhibitor and only prevents corrosion and muck in and around your cooling system, your thermo fans keep your car cool!!!!

Recently had a new water pump fitted to my jeep Cherokee but it's still overheating and the heater in the car doesn't work. Any idea what might be causing this


if no leaks in hoses, then flush out the radiator etc, there maybe a plug up in system. also change thermostat. God-Bless! and hope this helps you.

Could be a clogged heater-core, or it could be a bad thermostat. Waterpumps hardly ever fail, unless it is leaking. The pump mechanism is direct-drive, so if it is turning, it is working...
Try checking the thermostat in a pan of water, on the stove, with a thermometer to see when (IF) it opens. If it's NOT the thermostat try flushing the heater-core (buy a kit and use a garden hose).

Car is running hot and I put a new thermostat in and water bump


make sure the radiator cooling fans are coming on. GM has also had major problems with the lower intake gaskets leaking on the V-6 engines. sometimes when refilling the cooling systems air lock can occur. run the engine until it warms up and then turn off and let it cool down, if coolant level goes down repeat this process two or three times. other causes could be clogged radiator, or worse case scenario blown head gaskets. also i have on occasion got bad thermostats from the parts store. the upper radiator hose will get very hot when the thermostat opens. run the engine and hold the upper hose and when the t-stat opens the hose will get hot. then when the cooling fan comes on hot air will rush from from the fans. if the fans come on and the air is cool then there is a circulation problem. t-stat, clogged radiator, low coolant, head gaskets. good luck.

This is either a cooling system fault which could be, thermostat, radiator or fan thermo switch, check that both top and bottom hoses are hot, if one is cold the thermostat isn't opening, check to make sure the radiator fans are turning on. If the thermostat is opening and the fans are turning on you need to take the car to get the cooling system pressure tested as you may have a leaking head gasket.

Car run hot possible radiator got a hole and/or water pump coing bad.put water in it...water blows back at you.change thermo stat.


it cant be hot when you do it . you have to start the filling prosess when its cool.you will get a air pocket that wont go away. air pocket causes steam. you have to fill as the car warms up.

Sounds to me like you have put the thermostat in upside down.It still could be the pump,may not have the pumping ability it had when it was put in but i would check the thermostat first.

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

If you changed the hoses and thermostat and the car is still overheating, then the next thing to look at is the water pump. See if the water pump is leaking water from a vent hole. If it is, then the water pump is defective and will need to be replaced. Sure hope this helped.
