Hello is there a reason that I was rated innapropriate? I feel that I gave you a pretty good location for the starter. Can you please reconsider your rating? Thanks - Tech101

Car will not crank

If you can locate the starter, tap on it with a hammer a couple of times then try to start up.It may take several tries but it should work eventually because a starter doesn't usually fail 100%.If you can't locate it call around, someone will tell you for free because they want your business.Dealer,shops,whatever.Good luck!

Car drives perfect when stopped the odd time it might not crank over

the starters can get "heat saturated" and periodically not start. replace your starter motor. one way to tell is to next time it is driven, have someone with you and have already located the starter on the engine. when it wont start, tap lightly with a hammer or screwdriver(which ever will reach" and see if it fires.

My Ford 2002 wouldn't start. It Clicks once and then nothing? Its lights interior and exterior are working fine so I don't think it is the battery. How do I tell if it is the starter?

to check your starter, locate the starter, this should be on the side of the transmission and eng. there should be 2 wires going to it, 1 small wire (signal from your ignition switch) and one big one(power from your battery). use something metal to connect the 2 together. if it starts cranking over you know your starter is good.
Or you could just take it out and take it too your local auto parts store, most can bench test them.

Someone should be able to chime in but ford has microchip keys, i'm not sure if the computer shuts fuel off or stop ignition signal.

The car whines when i turn key in ignition jsut had alot of work done to car timing changed etc now my mechanic tells me it is the starter does it just go or is this a warning time to replace???????

Listen under the hood while someone else turns the key. The starter will be located at the junction of transmission and engine and if the whine comes from there, it means the Bendix that should force the starter to engage the flywheel isn't working and this normally means a replacement starter is needed. Rebuilts are pretty reliable and far less costly than new.
You could however, have a bad flywheel though with teeth missing.

Locating the starter on 90 Ford Festiva

Hi? Let's give it a bash!
Look where your gearbox meets with the enjin, locate the bolts that holds enjin and g/box together. The starter motor is located there and the connecting bolts are inline with the above mentioned bolts, the starter motor bolts on to the g/box and is located on the top half of the gearbox, should easily be visible ( under the hood, not underneath the vehicle.
Alternatively follow the thick red wire from the battery possitive to the rear of the starter motor also note that there is a thinner red wire from battery possitive to the alternator.
I hope this advice is helpfull!

Where is the starter located on the 1999 Chevy Lumina?

if everything shuts off when you try to start it you most likley have a bad wiring connection, check connections at battery and fuse block.

the starter is located on the lower front of the engine where the engine and the transmission come together, just above the subframe.
