Question about 2002 Subaru Outback

1 Answer

Have a 2002 Outback that hesitates when it's upshifting, usually around 30-40 MPH. When accelerating to go faster at higher speeds, the Check Engine Light comes on. ( Resets by unhooking battery) The check engine light has come on, and gone back off by itself though... Changed air filter, and fuel filter already.

Its probably the knock sensor! thats what happened to mines as well... its a common problem with this car.. the part costs 100.00 and all you need to change it is a wrench! :)

the only sure way to know tho is to get a diagnostic which can be done for free at autozone or sears :)

When accelerating, it hesitates and takes forever to speed up. When it gets up to about 40 mph, it starts shaking. Sometimes, it surges and chugs. Do not have power to overtake anyone and service engine...

Sounds like you may have a plugged catalytic converter. The easiest thing you can do yourself is unbolt the exhaust from the rear manifold. Test drive it with the exhaust unbolted. If the power is restored replace the cat.

You can also try unplugging the MAF sensor and see if it drives any better.

Reading the codes that have triggered the check engine light would be a good place to start as well. Knowing what codes are present will help steer you in the right direction a little faster.

The RPM of Nissan Altima stays high when drive over 65 MPH.

No....the rpms differ from engine to engine and from manufacturer to manufacturer. RPM's are always higher at higher speeds.

2005 Lincoln LS hesitation at low acceleration speeds

It could be a couple of issues:
  1. Since you mention 30mph a speed when the transmission wouild normally shift into 3rd, and again at high speed (you didnt' mention MPH) where it would possibly shift again, it's possible that the transmission is slipping. Check the fluid or better yet, if it's got around 50-60K on it, have the fluid and filter changed.
  2. Another cause could very well be fuel related, be it a filter, fuel sending unit, or the pump itself
I'd start with the transmission fluid. Check it and if the color is starting to brown, or gives a slight burning smell, have it changed along with the filter. If it's just low, then that definitely would cause the transmission to slip.
Best of luck and post back with any other concerns.

Maybe a transmission problem?

If you're only in "D", you should switch to "OD" when driving at higher speeds. "D" only allows you to move up to third gear whereas "OD" will move you into fourth. You're over-working your transmission by driving in "D".
